Can we find anything to bandage it? ‘Maybe he’s just been knocked out?’ Quester said hopefully, as he offered Root his flying scarf. Root nodded fervently as he knotted the scarf as best he could. It was a clumsy attempt.

He hoped so, too. He then examined the dwarf, gently lifting arms and legs. ‘Quester, give me a hand. Lift, no gently, lift and push then back again. I can’t feel any breaks…’ Tangnost groaned, making the pair of them jump. ‘Tangnost?’ Root bent over the inert Dragon Master. ‘Tangnost? Can you speak? Are you alright?’ Root swam into focus, and then the Dragon Master passed out again.

The next time he managed to hold on to his senses. It was full dark by then, but the rising half moons cast the ice in a pale glow. ‘Root?’ He blinked, putting his hand up to his bandaged head, it came away sticky with blood. ‘Tangnost? Are you alright?’ ‘Wait…’ the dwarf lay there a moment longer, until he had time to think.

His head thundered and he felt dizzy. He was also freezing…his limbs felt like lead. Even if his legs were broken he wouldn’t feel them. ‘T’ve cleaned the wound with snow and bandaged your head roughly,’ Root informed him. ‘But head wounds bleed a lot and I think you had better rest. You took a bad knock against the ice.

We were afraid you weren’t going to wake up!’ They had been petrified. If Tangnost died, they would be utterly lost. The dwarf tried to sit up, and grunted. Every breath was painful. ‘I think-’ he put his hand to his chest. ‘I’ve cracked some ribs. Help me up,’ he took a deep breath against the pain to come.

‘Gently.’ ‘Who else is injured?’ Tangnost cried out as he got to his feet with Root and Quester’s help and looked about. He frowned, wincing. ‘Where’s Quenelda? Is she alright? Where’s Storm?’ Root nodded. ‘She was strapped in. But Storm isn’t. He’s injured! Quenelda said his broken leg is bad. She is healing him.’ Root was anxious to get back to her and the big dragon before the snow buried the trail. With one arm about each boy’s shoulders, they still struggled to get Tangnost out of the huge crater.

Despite the cold, the Dragon Master was running with sweat from the pain. Painfully slowly, the trio hobbled slowly forwards in search of Stormcracker and Quenelda. Two Gulps had managed to dig himself out, and was now poking around looking for anything edible amongst the debris, which, Root noted, in fact was about anything within reach. He had found a couple of cooking pans, and had devoured most of the esquire’s dragonwings.

They almost tripped over Storm’s half buried talon sheath that had been ripped off.

I’m not sure whether I’ll be able to convey with words what I felt reading The Dragon Whisperer and Flight To Dragon Isle. The books were so irresistibly wonderful that I’ve read them back to back one after the other in a couple of days. I felt like I was ten again and that the universe was just a big adventure waiting to be discovered.

Caroline, from Goodreads I think The Dragon Whisperer is the best book I have ever read. (I have read a lot of books — in our house we have about twelve thousand) I think the way the words are written sounds like magic. Rachel, aged 14 It’s like Eragon for middle-school kids! I enjoyed every moment I spent reading this book.

The author is an excellent writer, the subject magnificent and the characters well developed and inspiring. The Dragon Whisperer has a strong female lead character and an unlikely male hero, the perfect pairing for a perfect book! ” The Sweet Bookshelf I’m your number 1 fan; your first book blew me away, I dream about being Quenelda every ae. Your second book is even better! Jessica The Dragon Whisperer ‘is a completely entrancing children’s tale. Every spare moment I had I searched out this book so that I could continue reading.

The Road Not Taken I urge anyone aged nine or over to snatch this up…A battle- dragon of a book.
