He stretched his wings, preparing to take flight. You might be right. In an instant, Asher bounded off into the woods, vanishing into the underbrush in search of prey. The quietness that followed his departure felt strangely serene. “Hopefully, he catches something big enough to fill that bottomless pit of his,” Ny Keena mused, watching the trees rustle in Asher’s wake. Roth, riding in easy silence beside her, grunted softly. “That hatchling may be young, but don’t underestimate him. He’s the most dangerous thing in these mountains right now.

It’s the local wildlife that should be worried.” Ny Keena smiled, though her thoughts strayed after Asher, her bond with him humming faintly in her mind. “He’s still just a baby.” “A baby,” Roth said with a wry smile, “with teeth sharper than your daggers and the instincts of a predator. Think of him like a chick. A hen shows the chicks where to forage, but eventually, they fend for themselves.”

Roth says you’re a chick, Ny Keena relayed through their bond, amused. And apparently, I’m the hen. What’s a chick? Asher’s confusion fluttered through their connection. Ny Keena’s lips twitched. A type of bird. I’ll show you one next time we see one. Can you eat them?

Ny Keena stifled a laugh. You can, but humans tend to keep them around for their eggs. Do humans eat eggs? Asher’s response was filled with disdain. How barbaric. Good luck with your hunt, Ny Keena sent with fond amusement, feeling him already losing interest in the conversation as the call of his hunger pulled him deeper into the wild.

There are plenty of fat ground birds here. Easy pickings, Asher replied before his presence retreated from her mind, leaving Ny Keena feeling oddly hollow in his absence. The quiet stretched between them as they rode deeper into the thickening forest. The sun was warm, the air soft with the scent of pine and earth.

Copyright © H. M. Chapter 39 Also by H.M. Clarke About the Author OceanofPDF.com T Chapter One HE MAN WAS DEAD. Ny Keena didn’t need to move closer to confirm it. She could feel the truth of it in the stillness that clung to his form, the pale pallor of his skin beneath the sunlight.

There was no smell yet. He hadn’t been there long. Her eyes swept the beach, seeking, but the only movement was the sea birds gliding in lazy circles above the golden sandstone cliffs. The bluffs loomed like ancient, jagged teeth, clenched in some eternal grimace, but there were no signs of life beyond the birds. Not even the scavengers had found him yet. No, he hadn’t been dead long. He lay on the glittering sands, half-cradled by the sea as if the ocean had rejected him, cast him back onto the shore like some unwanted, broken relic.

The briny scent of salt and seaweed filled her lungs, sharp and familiar. Ny Keena stood still, staring down at the body, the sea’s ceaseless murmur the only sound in the world. Then she turned her gaze to the water’s edge, where frothy balls of sea foam tumbled from the grip of the waves, propelled by the wind.

They danced across the sands, heedless of the lifeless form lying there. She could walk away. The thought came as a whisper, as light and fleeting as the sea breeze tugging at her hair.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
