After you have taken in this world, tell yourself that you are not alone. Everything, including you, is connected in the web of life energy that surrounds us every moment of our lives. Walk with this understanding inside your heart. Comments on the Practice It’s no small wonder that intentionally placing ourselves in the world of Nature can be a cure for loneliness. For thousands of years our human species has been in intimate contact with all the living beings of our natural environment.

As hunter-gatherers for much of our time here, we were just as much a part of Nature’s workings and cycles as everything living around us. In acknowl- edging this, prominent psychologists and biologists refer to a hid- den awareness deep within us that they term the ecological se/f or the world self: Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning science professor Edward Wilson uses the term diophi/ia to refer to our innate emo- tional affiliation to other life-forms on a genetic level.

Whatever you choose to call it, both our physical and sacred connections to Nature are undeniable, and through them the natural world is al- ways there for us when we need her most. Walks for Groups Although most of the Earthwalks included in this book can be performed by more than one person at the same time, the three walks in this section are specifically designed for the purpose of creating companionship and cooperation among those in a group— including children—while at the same time fostering a healthy and enjoyable interaction with the natural world.

These walks, like those I introduced in the last section, pro- mote the active engagement of our attention through a medium wholly separate from our language-based learning process that leads to knowledge of ourselves and the world around us. But along with promoting connection to ourselves and the world, these walks also encourage both a physical and an energetic connection to other human beings that is refreshingly devoid of the games of domina- tion that we so often play and free from the masks we so often wear to hide our vulnerabilities and insecurities.

| These practices allow you to share an energy and spirit with those who walk with you and create an opportunity for discovery and personal interaction that is rarely present during the hustle and bustle of our daily lives.

for Body and Spirit Exercises to Restore Our Sacred Bond with the Earth JAMES ENDREDY Foreword by VICTOR SANCHEZ a Bear & Company Rochester, Vermont Bear & Company One Park Street Rochester, Vermont 05767 www.InnerTraditions.com Copyright © 2002 by James Endredy All rights reserved.
