I can\u2019t risk another incident.\u201d Silver\u2019s face lit up with a smile that made my stomach flip. \u201cI\u2019ll do my best.\u201d He shifted on the bed, moving closer but still not touching me. The space between us felt charged, electric with possibility and restraint.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we at least try something small?\u201d he asked. \u201cJust to see if the bracers work?\u201d I swallowed hard, my heart hammering in my chest. \u201cLike what?\u201d \u201cLike this,\u201d he said, slowly extending his hand palm up between us. \u201cJust… hold my hand. That\u2019s it. Nothing more.\u201d I stared at his offered hand, at the purple skin and elegant fingers.<\/p>\n

It seemed like such a simple thing, but it felt monumental. My shadows, even dampened by the bracers, stirred restlessly around my ankles, eager to reach for him. \u201cAsh,\u201d Silver said softly. \u201cI promise, if anything feels wrong, we\u2019ll stop immediately. I just\u2026 I feel like if I don\u2019t touch you, I\u2019m going to go insane.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded slowly. \u201cI feel the same way.\u201d \u201cThen take my hand.\u201d I reached out slowly, my hand trembling slightly as it moved toward his. The bracers felt heavier than ever, like they were weighing down my entire arm. My shadows coiled tighter around my ankles, as if bracing themselves for what was about to happen.<\/p>\n

The moment our palms touched, that familiar electric current shot through me. It was stronger than I expected, even with the bracers dampening my magic. The sensation raced up my arm, spreading across my chest and making my breath catch. Silver\u2019s fingers curled around mine, warm and solid. I watched his face carefully, searching for any sign of discomfort or alarm. Instead, his eyes fluttered closed and he let out a soft sigh that sounded almost like relief.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay?\u201d he asked, opening his eyes to meet mine. \u201cYeah,\u201d I breathed. \u201cThe bracers are holding.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a pink tinge to his cheeks, proof that he was actually pissed at me.<\/p>\n

You said I could have four years at Widdershins Academy to do whatever I wanted.
