He’d bring us back stuffed animals from his road trips covering college football and basketball. I thought it was the coolest job in the world.” Finley’s passion for sports journalism took him to Naples, Florida, Tucson, Arizona and eventually Chicago, where he now serves as the Bears beat reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times.

Although the football season lasts 17 games, plus the playoffs, Finley said his beat is a year- round gig. As part of his beat, he covers the college draft, the NFL combine and the Super Bowl as well as the owners’ meetings and the free-agency market. Finley said a lot has changed over the years he has covered sports, particularly in terms of the 24/7 news cycle.

“In college, we used to watch the local evening sports news to make sure no one had something we didn’t, and then hit the bar,” he said. “Today, I can’t imagine ever feeling like I was truly ‘off the clock.’ Social media has changed that, but so has the fact that newspaper web sites are now the printing press that never closes.” To meet the needs of a voracious fan base, Finley said he relies heavily on social media to keep readers informed about everything happening to the Bears in real time.

“Fans want immediate reaction from us on social media every time the Bears do any little thing, and our bosses want a story up — and fast — to maximize the number of page views we get,” he said. “The two work hand-in-hand; the fastest and most efficient way to get people to our web site to read the story is to post it on social media.”

To my mom, Lynn, who set me up at the dining room table with her old manual typewriter when I was a kid and let me write until my heart was content. To my dad, Frank, who taught me that the best things in life come to he who hustles while he waits. To my wife, Amy, who has been there for me and with me through everything life has thrown at us. And to my daughter, Zoe, who always asks, “Did you put me in your new book?”

Yes, sweet pea, I did.
