After all, everyone knew the dungeon had grown weak and no longer provided the larger Magic Stones that were the mainstay of a dungeon city. From the looks of the few Bronze-ranked adventurers, few people above Copper even bothered anymore. That\u2019ll all change once we get the crystal back to Meri and claim the dungeon for her. Feeling more confident, maybe even a little too much, he led the beautiful women to the counter and slapped his hand on the dark stone.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes?\u201d an annoyed man grumbled. \u201cMay I help you?\u201d The clerk was several decades older, with white hair and a heavily lined face. He stared at Gabriel for several seconds until Sthuza presented her tag. \u201cI certainly hope you will,\u201d she said icily, and her haughty tone took both men by surprise. \u201cMadam, I was unaware anyone of your status was in our city. Please forgive my rudeness,\u201d the man said obsequiously as he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I am sure. Now to business, please. I have many more important things to do than deal with the Guild\u2019s vaunted red tape.\u201d \u201cOf course, Madam.\u201d \u201cFirst, my dear companion here, Gabriel Grimm, was robbed. Among his stolen belongings was his tag, I believe it was a Copper plate, yes?\u201d Sthuza turned to raise an eyebrow at him. He nodded, and the clerk gestured to the large table-mounted Soulstone.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well, I just need you to activate the Soulstone to confirm your identity,\u201d the man said, then paused. \u201cNot that I\u2019m questioning your story, Madam. It is a Guild requirement before I may authorize a replacement,\u201d he said in a rush. Sthuza narrowed her green eyes, a slight sneer on her lips, but she nodded. \u201cOf course, do hurry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gabriel held his breath as he placed a hand on the rare artifact. Soulstones were the foundation of the Guild\u2019s success. They allowed one to call up the physical, mental, and spiritual attributes of whoever activated them. The magical stone made it easy to track and rank members. One of their more mysterious features was attuning them to catalog monster kills, crimes committed, and several ancillary details that Gabriel had never cared to learn. Shouldn\u2019t Estrial have been tagged as a murderer after killing me?<\/p>\n

How will she deal with that the next time she visits the Guild? \u2018There are numerous loopholes that adventurers can manipulate, Master. Though, the Guild tries to suppress them.\u2019<\/p>\n

Gabriel smiled back as best he could through the viscera. Despite the horrible mess, he was grateful the dwarf had saved him. \u201cHold still a moment,\u201d a melodic female voice called out. He turned to face Estrial, the group\u2019s leader, and swallowed his response as the graceful elven sorceress stepped over and began chanting a spell. Her spellwork was flawless, like every other casting she\u2019d made in the past few hours of delving. As soon as the intricate glyphs solidified, she released the spell, and a wave of arcane energy, intentioned mana, washed over him.<\/p>\n

Her spell instantly purged all the grime and filth from his body, depositing it in a sickly ring of goo on the rough stone floor of the cavern. She even makes cleaning spells look elegant. \u201cThank you,\u201d Gabriel said without tripping over his tongue this time, though it didn\u2019t prevent snickering from the final two members of the group. Dresk and Derek were supposedly skilled swordsmen. So far, all the human twins had done was hurl petty insults and hateful glares his way whenever the elf paid Gabriel any attention.<\/p>\n

They were taller and broader than he was, and their equipment was shiny and well-fitted, unlike his hand- me-down sword and goblin grass gambeson. Gabriel figured they must be reasonably competent to be part of the sorceress\u2019 party.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
