He impressed her as a kind, caring person, and one who felt insulted that those highwaymen had accosted them on the road that ran alongside his estate. And the compassion he showed when hearing the incident described was genuine, she was confident. She refused to believe Mr. Darcy was the criminal who had robbed them. To entertain such an idea went against her every instinct regarding the man, and she refused to give in to foolish suspicions. With a final stoke of the brush through her hair, Elizabeth took her shawl from the chair and went downstairs to meet an increasingly impatient Jane who, along with Mrs. Bennet, waited in the entrance for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally,\u201d remarked Jane when Elizabeth stopped beside her. \u201cI feared you were never going to finish.\u201d \u201cIf not for your interruption, I would have been here first,\u201d replied Elizabeth to no one, as Jane and Mrs. Bennet were on their way to the carriage. When they had seated themselves, the coach left for the short ride to Meryton, whose assembly hall was nearly empty as they pulled up to the front.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe seem to be early,\u201d said she, to which Jane did not respond, as she looked around the property, as if searching for someone. \u201cMrs. Bennet,\u201d came a familiar voice, accompanied by Mr. Bingley\u2019s appearance at the entrance. Behind him, Mr. Darcy looked ill at ease, a marked difference from his friend\u2019s excited smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are glad to see you so early. Miss Bennet, Miss Elizabeth, it is so good to see you as well. Darcy was afraid we had arrived too early. He wanted to wait another hour, to avoid having to pay his respects to so many strangers.\u201d \u201cThey do not need a recitation of my reasons for wanting to delay our arrival,\u201d responded Darcy, wearing a smile that looked to Elizabeth more forced than genuine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not see Miss Bingley,\u201d remarked Elizabeth, scanning the entrance and the open yard where the carriages pulled in to deliver their passengers. \u201cIs she inside?\u201d \u201cShe stayed home tonight with a headache,\u201d replied Bingley, although his manner suggested another reason might be more truthful, as he did not look at her directly. \u201cPass along our best wishes for her recovery. We hope the problem is not too severe,\u201d said Elizabeth in commiseration. \u201cThat kind of pain can be debilitating.<\/p>\n

I can understand her reticence to attend an evening such as this, where the noise could make things worse.\u201d Bingley\u2019s smile of gratitude stretched from ear to ear. \u201cThank you, Miss Elizabeth, I will convey your message to Caroline, and to Mrs. Hurst, who stayed behind to tend to her sister.\u201d \u201cIt is good you came so early,\u201d said Jane.<\/p>\n
