You trust it so much that you allow other fears about other things to come out. What happens here is that you trust me, and you allow other fears, other feelings inside you, to come up. S: Sometimes I feel that I have trusted, but then I pull back to protect something in case the trust isn’t going to work out. AH: That means you don’t have trust, though you thought you did.

The third kind of trust will be like that sometimes. As far as you know, you trust the situation. But when you get deeply into it, you find out that because of unconscious fears you don’t really trust it. You can begin with the superficial kind of trust and find its limit. As the Work goes on, you can learn to allow the deeper trust. The more you work on the distrust and fears and paranoia, the more you’ll be able to surrender.

S: I think it’s also true that you can unconsciously trust more than you consciously trust. I go around pretending to myself and others that I don’t trust you, when actually my behavior indicates that I do. AH: Yes. It can happen that you trust but don’t know that you trust. You trust at the deeper level, but at the superficial level you don’t trust. That might be due to a fear of trusting.

It’s similar to when somebody loves a person and doesn’t know he does because he has a fear of loving. Now let’s say more about the nature of trust so we can connect it to what leads to or produces trust. We said trust has to do with the feeling of safety, security, and confidence in a person or a situation so that you can allow yourself to be open and without defenses, to be vulnerable, to be whoever you are. Emotionally, there is no need to fear.

Mentally, there is no worry or tension or concern about the situation. There are no paranoid thoughts. The mind is at rest; the heart is at rest. You have safety in the mind, security in the heart, confidence in the kath, the belly center. There is no need for agitation or tension in any of those places. So we can see why trust is a useful and good thing. When there is no tension in the mind, heart, or solar plexus, you are in a state that is conducive to self-understanding.

When there is no trust, it is hard to be present and vulnerable. What does vulnerable mean? Vulnerable means there is a delicate kind of openness.

This four-volume series presents a collection of talks given by Almaas on topics such as faith, commitment, nobility and suffering, truth and compassion, allowing, and growing up.
