The truth was that during the year they developed EmPath Jim had occasionally experienced qualms, which he’d kept to himself, about the direction their game was going. It had been coming along well in most respects. They had a kick-ass artist, who recommended an amazing composer.

Both were costly but willing to take a portion up front, the balance to come from sales of the game. Jim and Eli worked well together, played off one another as they brainstormed ideas. He’d look over at Eli, tapping away, concentrating, a small smile on his face, the one he had when he was on track, his hair wilder than ever, face a day unshaven. Eli typically had a Grande Starbucks cup at his elbow, which he picked up occasionally to sip when pausing to think.

He tended to get to the office at ten-thirty— Jim had been there working since eight-thirty—but he stayed in the office quite late. He had no kids, no partner, no responsibilities; twice a week Jim had to leave by five to get Aimee before the childcare centre closed at five- thirty, as Alison said they couldn’t afford the babysitter five days a week.

When Jim had been late picking her up a couple of times, the centre’s director, a kind woman in her sixties with long grey hair she kept in a ponytail, had spoken to him about it. The teachers here are committed, she’d said, but they have their own lives to get home to—some had their own children.

Bryan Walpert’s novel Entanglement was a finalist for the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards in 2022, and his novella Late Sonata won the 2020 Seizure Viva La Novella Prize in Australia. He knew this was an abnormal, inappropriate thought for a man tied up in a Lexus. Several parts of his body throbbed. His mind drifted through a number of thoughts that seemed inappropriate in context. His late wife, for instance, how he first met her in a country he had never expected to visit, about the many years they’d had together there, then here. He thought about their son, the little boy learning to swim in Auckland, then the man he had become here, some ten thousand miles away.

He recalled in minute detail the first time his son brought home the woman he would marry. He could picture the skirt she wore, the one with the buttons down the front; his son’s short-sleeved blue shirt; the smell of the salmon in the oven. He remembered knowing that they would become something.

He liked how she applied her wit gently to his son, who could be too serious. He thought about a movie he was planning to watch that very evening and, oddly, grew briefly angry that he might not ever be able to see it. He thought about the milk nearing its expiration date, the garden weeds to be pulled.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
