To take them down in maximum effectiveness they\u2019d have to hit them in fast succession. Not long, a quarter second differential would be more than enough. When the OAV left the forest and came in view of the city, we were stuck on the road. The field to the left and right were littered with traps that could slow us down or outright get us stuck.<\/p>\n

Like the last city, they opened fire quickly even with us out of range, and most of their attacks hit since we couldn\u2019t dodge. The first two attacks were weak, probing, and likely to make sure they could hit us. The third attack however all fifty-five mages attacked with their full power. The strength of the magic streaking across the field and into our shields was devastating. But they\u2019d all attacked at the same time, so instead of taking down over half our shields, only twenty of them were cycled through.<\/p>\n

As far as I could figure, the battle was already over. They\u2019d have about thirty seconds to regain a tenth of their magic for one more desperate attack before we killed them. At that point we were also close enough to feel the ground right before we were in range, and there was no magic at all in it. No magical traps, which made Michael frown with worry and focus as he looked around. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d Jace said, \u201cNo ground traps.<\/p>\n

The enemy isn\u2019t doing what we expected, which is never a good sign. We have to assume this isn\u2019t their whole plan, and we have no idea what\u2019s coming.\u201d Michael hissed in alarm, \u201cTwelve portals just opened. Six left and behind, six right and behind. Wait for the mages to clear them, then fire the one-use weapons. Firebombs take out the left group, Mika, take out the group on the right. We\u2019ll use the turrets to clear the wall as planned.\u201d That was a good plan.<\/p>\n

I mean, we had little choice, and the one-use weapons were called for exactly to their purpose, overwhelming the enemy before they could overwhelm us if they got us in such a position. I launched them right away, since it\u2019d take a little time for them to cross the distance, opposed to the fire grenades which the earth mages could toss across the distance in a split second. Still, insects flew quickly enough, at least relative to magical range.<\/p>\n

We should act while we still have the upper hand. The enemy has lost over four hundred mages to us these last few years, and they\u2019ve obviously shifted to a growth phase while they try to figure out how to duplicate all the magic we\u2019ve been doing. No doubt sending in spies and putting their smartest mages on reverse engineering the effects. \u201cMagical steamships that dominate the ocean, zeppelins, automated defenses, and so on. They\u2019re stretched thin. I really think we can kick them off the peninsula, reclaim the other three cities.<\/p>\n

If the council works with the alliance and they make noise down south, I think we can stretch them even thinner. Perhaps to the breaking point.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
