We listened, enthralled by the troll\u2019s narrative. The troll’s words painted a vivid picture of an island that had borne witness to the machinations of a madwoman who unleashed countless tragedies and had ultimately made the island a dark place. The troll waved off our empathetic comments and gestured to the pool. \u201cYou eat for your babies.<\/p>\n

Then you destroy the magic.\u201d I nodded and knelt down to examine the creatures inside the pool. Stella whistled next to me. \u201cHow do we do this?\u201d One giant hand swiped through the water so fast the fish and other critters couldn\u2019t swim away. The troll held a bounty and smiled at us. He dropped it on the rock and gestured to it with his chin. \u201cEat.\u201d \u201cThank you!\u201d I called out before I conjured my witch fire. Starting a fire would risk attracting the demons and jeopardizing our safety, so I roasted the sea creatures briefly with my witch fire.<\/p>\n

We fell into silence as we cooked and ate the crustaceans the troll gathered from the large tidepool. We shared it with him, and he seemed pleased with the cooked version. Stella looked over at me with her brows furrowed from concern and broke the silence a few seconds later. “Phoebe, I’ve been thinking about our situation. We need to make a plan. We can’t keep wandering aimlessly through this jungle without a goal.\u201d I was grateful she broached the subject and hoped that meant she had some ideas.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re right, Stella. We need a plan. But with everything that’s happened, where do we even start?\u201d \u201cThe troll mentioned power beneath the earth,\u201d Avenir said around a mouthful. \u201cThe demons mentioned something about a central hub or camp, and I got to thinking maybe the two are connected. It might be worth trying to locate it. That could give us a clearer sense of what’s happening on this island.\u201d \u201cAnd it could be the key to finding a way off this accursed place.\u201d It was nice to hear the hope in Lorelei\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n

We discussed the idea further, our conversation growing animated as we shared our thoughts. Though the situation was perilous, there was a newfound sense of purpose in our group. The discovery of the tide pools had given us more than much-needed sustenance and energy. Together, we would navigate the island’s treacherous terrain and uncover its secrets.<\/p>\n
