What\u2019s the deadline for?\u201d Trixie drew a deep breath, fingers sketching a wavy line in the air as if outlining invisible text.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of Clause Fourteen, Subsection B.\u201d She yawned. \u201cGods, I almost died of boredom there for a moment. Anyway, when Kay\u2019s great-grandmother or whatever signed the partial-sovereignty pact, she forced the council to promise a minimum notice window for any charter stuff. Thirty-six hours. No wiggle.\u201d<\/p>\n

I drummed the staff butt on the floor, earning a glare from three Mage- Knight observers posted inside the door. \u201cSo Vorlius plays nice until the clock runs out.\u201d \u201cExactly!\u201d Trixie plopped onto the bench now, legs folded under her. She snagged Khla\u2019s untouched roll, sniffed it, and crammed half in her cheek like a squirrel. \u201cThe moment the sand empties from the hourglass,\u201d she muttered, chewing, \u201che can declare non-compliance and bring every wand in range to bear.\u201d Lazy tilted her head. \u201cHow fast is that?<\/p>\n

Seconds? Minutes?\u201d \u201cFast,\u201d Trixie said through crumbs. Thessa\u2019s tail wound around my calf like a python. \u201cKay can still file an injunction.\u201d Trixie shook her head. \u201cOnly in Capital Court. Travel alone takes a day. No portal permissions for us right now.\u201d She gulped, washed the bread down with my water, then tapped the hour mark on her wrist as if a watch existed there.<\/p>\n

\u201cTick-tock.\u201d Khla set elbows on the table, voice low. \u201cHow does charter revocation hurt the academy?\u201d \u201cMagocracy yanks every license,\u201d I answered. \u201cNo funding, no protection, no supply. The school becomes squatter territory.\u201d Thessa ran a claw down her horns and thumped the dented fork on the tray. \u201cWhich means Vorlius gets the staff. Not to mention Wade.\u201d Trixie added, \u201cAnd the rest of us get court-martialed for harboring the \u2018threat.\u2019\u201d I tasted copper behind my teeth. \u201cWe need options.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lazy\u2019s ears drooped. \u201cI vote we sneak out again. Worked last time.\u201d Khla shook her head. \u201cGates sealed. Patrols triple.\u201d Trixie folded her arms on the table, breasts squishing like a pair of fluffy pillows.<\/p>\n

We were enjoying some well-deserved R&R after the Aquana Games, and life couldn\u2019t be much better. Thessa lay half-atop me, head in my lap, tail curved like a question mark over the grass. Lazy sprawled on her stomach nearby, drawing idle circles in the dirt with her fingertip. Khla leaned against the trunk, arms folded, fresh scratches among the older ones on her knuckles from sparring class.<\/p>\n

Even if she was a healer, she loved a little fight every now and then. \u201cTell me again why Bestiary quizzes need the full latinate names,\u201d Lazy drawled. \u201cIt\u2019s a stupid big old crab, not… whatever Professor Gammicka calls it.\u201d \u201cCarcinus lavae,\u201d Khla supplied without looking up. Lazy stuck out her tongue. \u201cSee? Nobody outside a chalk-dust dungeon cares.\u201d Thessa toyed with a cherry pastry she\u2019d filched from breakfast. \u201cJust burn the quiz next time and call it research into pyromancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

A crumb fell on her chest; she popped it between full lips, licking sugar from a tooth while she watched my eyes track the motion. She grinned in triumph when my cheeks heated. I cleared my throat. \u201cGammicka doesn\u2019t strike me as the type who appreciates pyromancy.\u201d Suddenly, a steady hum cut across the academy grounds. Our eyes were drawn up, and heads popped up across the lawn\u2014elf, harpy, minotaur, everything in skirts and jackets.<\/p>\n

Even Khla pushed off the oak. Across the sky, a flying barge drifted down through the morning haze. Gilded struts caught the sun, making the hull glow like poured honey. Along the bow shone the five-pointed star and ouroboros of the Magocracy. \u201cOh,\u201d Khla muttered, hand drifting to the small of her back where a war hammer would ride if rules allowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cState brass.\u201d Lazy\u2019s ears flattened. \u201cPretty toy for politicians\u2026\u201d I nodded slowly. The arrival felt a little\u2026 ominous.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
