We can both get what we want.” “And what makes you think you know what I want, sister?” “Because I know you,” Jane answered. “I know you better than anyone here.” Carrie studied her sister for a long moment, swishing the liquor around in her mouth before swallowing. She glanced down at the label. “They had an entire case of this stuff. Johnnie Walker. Blue label. Shit goes for like five hundred dollars a bottle.” She brought the end of the bottle to her nose and took a whiff.

“Damn. That is the good stuff.” “Are you going to listen, or should I take my business elsewhere?” Jane asked. Carrie laughed and then gestured for her men to lower their weapons as she walked past, moving closer to Carrie. “You’ll have to forgive them. They don’t know you like I do. If they did, they’d know you wouldn’t pull the trigger on me.

You don’t have the balls.” Jane clenched her fists at her sides, knowing her sister was only trying to get under her skin. But she hated how effective it was. “All right, Janey,” Carrie said between swigs of the liquor. “Go on. Tell me what you want.” Jane walked within an arm’s reach of her sister. “I want half of the weapons.” Carrie snorted. “Big ask, considering you haven’t given me anything yet.” “I wasn’t finished,” Jane replied.

“Half the guns, and you don’t do anything without my say so. No off-the-rails crazy shit. Nothing like what you pulled today. Got it?” Carrie narrowed her eyes. “Must be one hell of a bargaining chip you have to say all of that.” She took a swig, pushing the liquor into the left side of her mouth, causing her cheek to bulge before she swallowed it.

“All right, Janey. I’ll submit to your terms.” She took one step closer. “So what do I get in return?” “There’s a compound,” Jane said. “It has the kind of infrastructure we could use to build something permanent. And it’s the only place left like it in the area.” “Location, location, location,” Carrie said. “Real estate 101.” Jane knew the offer was only a symbol. She knew the real win for Carrie would be to have Jane by her side again.

That was the real prize.

Copyright 2020 All rights reserved worldwide. Shit.” She grunted in frustration for not having saved her progress. When the computer refused to reboot, Sarah slammed the laptop shut. She paced the carpeted floor of her small bedroom before checking the light switch, confirming power was out for the whole house.

She then reached for her mobile, but it too was off, the smartphone now as useful as a brick of plastic. “This doesn’t make any sense.” Sarah stared at the black screen of her phone. It was possible the laptop had run out of battery and she just hadn’t been paying attention, but her phone had been plugged into the charger. It should still be working. And then her father’s voice crept into Sarah’s head, and she remembered the terrifying three-letter word he had explained to her and the consequences of such an event.

Sarah immediately wandered through the darkened two-bedroom house where she lived with her aunt as she attended classes at Charlotte University. The space was small, and Aunt Rachel was abnormally messy, but Sarah didn’t mind picking up and keeping the space tidy. She navigated the darkness without banging her knee into anything, having traversed the space more than once in pitch black and also slightly inebriated.

She didn’t drink often, but she had been to a few keggers with friends. Sarah snatched her car keys out of the small porcelain bowl on the entryway table and opened the front door and stepped outside to nothing but a clear night sky with a million stars and the moon above shining down on a city that had gone completely dark. She hurried toward her car. She couldn’t stop her fingers from shaking as she unlocked the driver side door and shoved the keys into the ignition.

She hesitated a moment before turning the ignition, and then her heart skipped a beat when she heard nothing but a click.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
