Bintu, a tech entrepreneur in Toronto, has an open- ended approach. \u201cIt\u2019s not like I\u2019m looking for someone to marry or someone to have kids with\u2014not really,\u201d says the 29-year-old. \u201cI\u2019m looking for someone who has the qualities that I would want in a partner.\u201d Naturally, twentysomethings have to contend with a dating scene that\u2019s reflective of the chaotic world around them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like a lot of people have more social anxiety, maybe as an outcome of COVID,\u201d she says. \u201cWith dating, it just seems like men don\u2019t really approach [people] that much.\u201d This creates a dynamic that she\u2019s not entirely comfortable with. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be the pursuer; I want to be pursued.\u201d Vanessa, a Brighton, Ont., office manager and content creator, isn\u2019t too fond of dating apps but has found some success on Hinge.<\/p>\n

Since she lives in a smaller town, she\u2019s tried changing her geotag to U.S. cities like New York or Los Angeles to expand her pool of women to match with. In her mid-20s, Vanessa gave up alcohol and became more health focused. With that came a new approach to dating altogether.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made the decision [that] I\u2019m only dating to find my person,\u201d she says. \u201cI want to be really intentional.\u201d At 29, she has yet to be in a serious relation- ship, but she has experienced a number of situationships. \u201cSo many times throughout the past three to four years, I thought, \u2018I\u2019m so ready for a relationship.\u2019 And then I realized I actually wasn\u2019t. I had to do a lot more healing.\u201d 30s \u201cWe\u2019re all so tired of the apps.<\/p>\n

I think we\u2019re burnt- out,\u201d says Min, a 31-year-old senior project manager in Toronto. \u201cThey\u2019ve gotten so much worse. It\u2019s like they\u2019re hiding all the good [matches] behind a paywall.\u201d Meeting someone offline isn\u2019t easy either. When Min goes solo bar-hopping, she\u2019s seldom approached. \u201cI\u2019m the one making conversation all the time,\u201d she says. \u201cMen in Toronto are not very proactive.\u201d For the time being, she\u2019s satisfied with being the main character of her own life. \u201cMy goal right now is [to] be hot, have fun and get rich.<\/p>\n

Being with a man is not the goal anymore. We\u2019re told as women [to] get married by 30 and have kids. We\u2019re given these milestones that trap us into a life that doesn\u2019t give us a lot of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n
