As for the rifles, we\u2019ll pack them in the sleeping bags to keep them as insulated as possible.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ll still want a touch of ambergris,\u201d the second sailor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAntarctica has a way of breaking things that aren\u2019t supposed to break.\u201d \u201cFair enough,\u201d Trent said. \u201cI leave it to your expertise. We haven\u2019t been properly introduced yet, by the way.\u201d He extended a hand. \u201cAgent Talon. I\u2019d tell you my real name, but I\u2019d get in a lot of trouble if my boss found out.\u201d The first sailor took his hand. He spoke with a moderate Irish accent. \u201cYou\u2019re really CIA, then?\u201d \u201c\u2018Fraid so,\u201d Trent replied.<\/p>\n

The man nodded. \u201cI\u2019m Finney.\u201d He hooked a thumb at his companions. \u201cRoger and Lars.\u201d Roger nodded. \u201cSo what\u2019s going on? I heard a research station was attacked by pirates?\u201d \u201cSomething like that,\u201d Trent said. \u201cWe\u2019re coming to take the station back.\u201d \u201cWhat the hell would pirates want with a science camp in Antarctica?\u201d Lars asked. Trent couldn\u2019t answer that question, but he could still tell the truth. \u201cSome people are just evil.\u201d The three sailors exchanged a glance amongst themselves that told Trent they didn\u2019t consider that a satisfactory explanation.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t press him for more, though. \u201cYou ever been to Antarctica before?\u201d Roger asked. \u201cOr anywhere really cold?\u201d \u201cNot like this,\u201d Trent admitted. \u201cI\u2019ve been in some pretty harsh conditions, but not in Antarctica.\u201d \u201cThe biggest problem you\u2019re going to run into is fatigue,\u201d Roger explained. \u201cAye,\u201d Finney agreed. \u201cYour bodies will have to work harder to keep warm than they normally would. That means your heart will beat faster, you\u2019ll get tired faster, and you\u2019ll need to eat more than normal just to keep your energy.<\/p>\n

If you move slowly, you can alleviate some of those effects, but the kind of cold we\u2019re looking at, you\u2019ll still have to be careful.\u201d \u201cYou can\u2019t overexert yourself,\u201d Lars continued. \u201cI know you\u2019re in a hurry, but you\u2019re not anymore. You understand?\u201d \u201cGot it,\u201d Trent said. The men were lecturing him like he was a child, but they clearly meant well.<\/p>\n
