How old was Ameerah when you brought her home?\u201d Her mother hesitated, then quietly replied, \u201cTwo weeks.\u201d Fiza glanced at me. \u201cThat\u2019s impossible. She said earlier that Ameerah and Afaan didn\u2019t have known last names, which means they were abandoned by both parents.<\/p>\n

The law requires a thorough search for living relatives, the way I\u2019ve been doing for Leila and Rahim. There is no way that could have been completed in just two weeks.\u201d The longer I listened, the more it all made sense. \u201cThey sold their property to adopt two young children with no last names,\u201d I said aloud, voicing what Fiza was already thinking.<\/p>\n

She swept her hand across her face and let out a sigh. \u201cExcept that\u2019s not called adoption. That\u2019s called human trafficking.\u201d Junaid Bhai stood outside the interrogation room, shaking his head. \u201cI can\u2019t believe Ameerah\u2019s parents would do such a thing.\u201d Fiza and I couldn\u2019t understand it either. Human trafficking was an offense that gave law enforcement agencies nightmares.<\/p>\n

Not only due to the heinous crime itself, but because of the condition we often found the victims in. From my cousin Nosheen to Leila and Rahim, people close to me bore the evidence of its devastation. None of which Ameerah had seemingly suffered from. \u201cThere is only one way to know for sure,\u201d Fiza pointed out. \u201cI know,\u201d Junaid Bhai sighed. Truth was never convenient. Junaid Bhai was done playing the good cop. He laid out the sales deed on the table. \u201cCare to explain how you managed to bring home two nameless children in just two weeks? And why does that coincide with you selling off this property?\u201d Eyes wide, Nauman Sheikh recovered quickly from the initial shock before folding his arms over his chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not saying another word without my lawyer.\u201d His defiance did not deter the DG. \u201cCome on, Nauman. I\u2019ve known you for years. You don\u2019t seem like the type who would be involved in criminal activity. Just tell me why you sold this property.\u201d The man refused. \u201cI know my rights.\u201d<\/p>\n
