Find a parking place, Arrow. The en¬ trance to the tunnels is at the next comer.” * * * We parked in the heart of historic Moose Jaw. Many buildings were brick two-storeys with flat roofs. Win¬ dows and doorways were arched in red brick.

A sign read OK FOODS OK. Across a dusty parking lot, a faded advertisement on an old building invited us to visit THE BLUE STORE MEN’S WEAR. At the tunnel entrance, Candy said goodbye to us. “I’ve got errands to run before we leave Moose Jaw.” She kissed Arrow’s cheek. “See you later, handsome.” As I exchanged a glance with Marie, Smollett gave Candy a sulky look.

“What about our meal at Pizza Hut?” “I’m not hungry.” “I confess I’m disappointed, Candy.” “Another time, okay?” As Candy hurried away, we entered a building where a sign said TUNNELS OF LITTLE CHICAGO. While Smollett purchased tickets, Marie and I checked out the gift shop with Arrow. Other tourists joined us, and then we were escorted into the tunnels. The history was explained by a friendly guide as she took us along dusty, narrow passages where bare light- bulbs fought the gloom. The tunnels were narrow but high, so we didn’t need to stoop.

“The CPR brought workers from China to help construct the railway,” she said, her words echoing between the stone walls. “The Chinese workers built these tunnels to hide from racist thugs in the streets. Most of Moose Jaw’s Chinese restaurants were connected by the tunnels.” We entered a large room with tables and chairs. “Later on, others discovered the tunnels,” the guide ex¬ plained.

“Some people actually lived down here.”

Books by Eric Wilson The Tom and Liz Austen Mysteries 1.
