Some organizations have launched green teams and developed sustainability departments. The Preface of the book Greening Health Care (Gerwig, 2015) briefly describes an exemplar hospital that is environmentally sustainable in terms of size, healthy landscaping, access to public transportation, connection with nature, eco-friendly building materials, recycling, conservation of energy and water, carbon neutrality, minimal use of toxic chemicals, and other strategies. These strategies are more in line with “health” than many or most sick care organizations.

In addition, in the Preface the author mentions that “the best thing we can do for the environment is to reduce our own health risks, or if we are healthy to stay that way (Gerwig, 2015, p. ix). It is true that most health problems are preventable; and if we change the focus of health services to a greater emphasis on evidence-based strategies to promote health, that should lead to a decrease in the need for sick care services that are financially costly, burdensome to patients and their families, and generally do significant harm to the environment.

Any type of industry can implement wellness initiatives that may benefit the employees and the bottom line of the company, while helping to reduce use of sick care services. Through their courage and visionary work in Oracle, the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments was born and from that point on the environmental health movement within nursing grew exponentially.

Thank you for your amazing vision and leadership as we work together in support of healthier environments for all.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
