This complex reality of event delivery combines with the pulsating nature of the events organization, which requires a much larger group of people to load-in and deliver an event on-site than it does to plan.

As a result of this need for rapid expansion of people power, many event organizations have developed a flexibility that includes the capacity to increase in size for on-site delivery of events. The limitations and benefits of working as a wider team alongside those outside your own organization are explored in this chapter, introducing models that have proved their worth and identifying drawbacks and opportunities in an industry where groups of individuals, previously unknown to each other, come together to deliver outstanding events.

It is important that within this critical process, managers of complex teams understand individual communication preferences and cultural diversity, and can develop processes for managing partners, clients and suppliers. Within this chapter, we explore a range of approaches and develop the concept of ‘collaborative working’ as it applies in the events industry.

This chapter addresses the core people-related issues facing those who are involved in developing and delivering events. The first aspect we cover is the overall complexity of events and the pulsating nature of organizations in the events industry. This aspect combines the event’s core team with a wide variety of contractors, suppliers, freelancers and, often, volunteers, part time and full time, who have to work together effectively within a team structure from the inception of the event process. The complexity and pulsating nature of event teams, along with the multiplicity of internal and external staff, make the human resource management of events very different from many other industries.

To my beloved grandchildren – the new generation, as you begin to explore events for yourselves: Aria, Celine, Lilia and Joel, with all my love, from Nanny. And of course, to Bernie and Dan, the best team ever. RUTH To Alister and Jojo, you are my constant source of strength and love and purpose. I would not be who I am without your love, understanding, support and belief that I have wisdom that needs to be shared. To Ruth and Dan, my co-authors and friends whose brilliance, friendship and shared vision have made this work possible.

This edition, as with everything else, continues to be a privilege and a joy. To Adrian Richardson, my former law lecturer, thank you for your knowledge and wisdom and passion. Your belief that an understanding of law was critical inspired me through the writing of the new legal chapter. Twenty years later, your legacy truly lives on! BERNIE To Ally and Evie with love for keeping me going, Ruth and Bernie for sharing the journey, and students past and present from the UK Centre for Events Management for their enthusiasm and achievement as they progress in this exciting industry and change it for the better.

DAN OceanofPDF.com 01 02 CONTENTS Preface Acknowledgements Walkthrough of textbook features and online resources Events – the changing environment Defining an event Classifications and categories of events The events industry Relationships with other industry sectors Real-world example: A Greener Future Real-world example: Reality check: Macao’s concert economy Real-world example: Alignment with United Nations SDGs: Tata Mumbai Marathon, India (TMM) References The event planning model Event planning process Phase 1: Research, concept development and screening Phase 2: Design and detailed planning Phase 3: Managing the event on-site Phase 4: Post-event: evaluation and reporting A final word on the event planning process…

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
