Their fully calibrated output, embedded temperature sensor, and wide pressure ranges (±1 kPa to 1000 kPa) ensure reliable, AI‑ready sensor data for long‑term equip- ment health monitoring.

as particulate accumulation on the membrane rarely impacts the mechan- ical deformation properties signifi- cantly. However, this can affect the sensor’s response time. Digital Advantage Modern MEMS sensors have integrated the signal chain into the package, which provides an edge over the conventional “analog only” MEMS sensors: > ASIC Integration: The raw analog signal (millivolts) is amplified and digitized by an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC).

> DSP Calibration: An onboard Digital Signal Processor (DSP) applies polyno- mial correction factors for linearity and temperature. This is vital because silicon strain gauges are tempera- ture-sensitive; without compensation, a hot attic would read differently than a cool basement for the same pressure. > Direct Interface: Data is put out via I2C or SPI, eliminating the need for complex analog front-end circuitry on the host PCB.

Digital MEMS sensors provide calibrated, low-noise, drift-free data ideal for accurate Micro-Machined Sensor Precision The hardware enabling this revolution has shifted from bulky mechanical switches to micro-scale silicon. Thermal Flow vs. MEMS Pressure Engineers often debate about thermal mass flow sensors and differential pressure sensors. > Thermal Flow Sensors operate by heating a micro-wire and measuring the heat transfer to the passing air. While accurate, they are highly suscep- tible to contamination. A layer of dust on the heating element insulates it, causing “drift” and false readings, or in worse cases, dust particles might block the air channel, causing a sensor failure.

> MEMS Pressure Sensors (Piezo-re- sistive) utilize a silicon membrane with embedded strain gauges. The air pressure deforms the membrane, changing the resistance of the Wheat- stone bridge. Crucially, the air does not flow through the sensor but pushes against it (dead-ended).

The Elektor web archive from 1974! 8x Elektor Magazine (print) 8x Elektor Magazine (digital) 10% discount in our web shop and exclusive off ers Access to more than 5,000 Gerber fi les The Digital membership!
