It was… nice. Comfortable. Almost like— No. She wasn’t going there. “I’m going to bed,” she announced abruptly when the episode ended. “It’s 9 PM.” “I’m tired from arguing with you all day.” “Fair.” He stretched, and her eyes definitely didn’t track the movement. “I’ll take the couch tonight.” She paused. They hadn’t discussed sleeping arrangements. The elephant in the room wearing dinosaur pajamas. “The bed’s big enough,” she heard herself say.

“We can… share. Like adults.” “Adults who hate each other.” “Exactly.” “With a pillow wall?” “Obviously.” Twenty minutes later, they were in bed with their reconstructed pillow wall. Ayesha stared at the ceiling, hyper-aware of every sound, every movement from his side. “Ayesha?” “Yeah?” “Your coffee was actually good.” “I know.” “Arrogant.” “Accurate.” “Riyansh?” “Yeah?” “Your apartment’s not horrible.” “High praise.” “Don’t let it go to your head.” “Too late.” Silence fell again. The pillow wall stood firm between them, a fabric monument to their denial.

“Goodnight, wife,” he said softly. “Goodnight, husband,” she replied before she could stop herself. Then, mortified by the domesticity of it all, she grabbed a pillow and hit him with it over the wall. “What was that for?” “Being you!” “I’m literally just lying here!” “Aggressively!” “How does one lie aggressively?” “You’re managing it!” He threw a pillow back. She retaliated. Soon they were having their second pillow fight in two days, the carefully constructed wall demolished again.

When they finally settled down, breathless and laughing, the pillows were everywhere except between them. Again. “We’re bad at boundaries,” Riyansh observed. “The worst,” Ayesha agreed. “Should we rebuild?” “Probably.” Neither moved. “Or…” he said slowly, “we could just agree to stay on our respective sides. Like adults.” “Mature adults.” “Who hate each other.” “Completely.” “Deal?” “Deal.” They shook on it, very professionally, then retreated to their sides of the bed. Three hours later, they were tangled together in the middle, fast asleep, the agreed-upon boundaries forgotten.

The apartment, witnessing its first day of the Malhotra Marriage Wars, settled in for what promised to be an interesting journey. Because everyone knows the best battles are the ones where both sides secretly want to lose.

The characters and events portrayed in this book are fictitious. The garden looked magical with pink and white balloons everywhere. A real magician was making balloon animals. And the cake— oh, the cake was amazing. Three layers shaped like a princess castle with pink towers and candy flowers. “Make a wish, beta!” her mom said, lighting seven sparkly candles. Ayesha closed her eyes tight. She wished that stupid Riyansh Malhotra would just disappear forever.

“That cake is dumb.” Her eyes flew open. Of course he was here. Her stomach dropped, the wish dying on her lips. Riyansh stood behind her with his arms crossed. Chocolate ice cream was smeared on his Spider-Man shirt. “Real princesses don’t live in pink castles.” Ayesha felt her cheeks burn. This was HER day. Her perfect day. And he was ruining it, just like he ruined everything. “Yes they do!”

She stomped her foot, hands balling into tiny fists. “You don’t know anything!” “I know more than you.” He came closer to poke at one of the candy roses, his eyes gleaming with that familiar mischief that made her want to scream. “And this isn’t even real cream.

It’s that gross hard stuff.” “Riyansh, beta, be careful—” his mom called out. Too late. Riyansh’s foot caught on something. His arms windmilled wildly. Then, like a slow-motion scene from a movie, he fell forward. SPLAT. Face-first into Ayesha’s beautiful castle cake. Everyone froze. Even the magician’s rabbit looked shocked. Riyansh lifted his head. Pink frosting dripped from his nose. A candy flag stuck to his forehead. The castle was completely destroyed. “MY CAKE!” Ayesha screamed. Something inside her snapped. Months of planning, days of excitement, all destroyed in pink frosting.

She launched herself at him, her small fists flying. “I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU!” “Ow! Stop! It was an accident!” Riyansh tried to dodge while wiping cream from his eyes, genuinely panicked for once. His voice cracked with something almost like guilt. Their parents rushed over to pull them apart. “Such passionate children,” Mrs. Malhotra laughed. “They’ll be best friends one day,” Mrs. Kapoor added.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
