They reckon maybe you can’t see it straight on account of some history.\u201d \u201cOh, I can see it straight, believe me,\u201d Tara said in a tone too close to a snarl to make herself believe the words she spoke. \u201cThat right?\u201d The older woman\u2019s gaze was shrewd, and her mouth curled at one corner into a lopsided smirk.<\/p>\n

Unable to pretend in front of the mirror held up to her, Tara sagged and returned the half-smile. \u201cI can see why people might think that, but you tell me someone better to hunt one of them,\u201d she said simply. \u201cTrue, but experience don\u2019t count for shit if you make yourself a liability. How you gonna feel if you freeze up and get someone hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n

The blunt way she posed the question made it hard to be angry, and Tara recognized the tactic as an effective one. Brutal honesty, delivered through supportive questioning, and enhanced by good food and reassurance. Tara had done similar things to so many people to get them to open up, but understanding the tactic didn\u2019t diminish the effect. \u201cI already don\u2019t forgive myself for what I did, but that would be ten times worse. And before you say it, I know what revenge looks like.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not dumb.\u201d \u201cNobody said you was dumb, girl. Just checking if you thought you might be.\u201d The half-smile crept higher up her ample cheek and found itself reflected in Tara\u2019s face. She ate in silence, just enjoying the company until the sandwich started to hit home and she felt revived by it. Finishing, she stood and carried her plate to the sink.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust leave it there. I\u2019ll fix it later after everyone else comes through and makes a mess for me,\u201d Mrs. Bodinski said, making her life sound like one long list of hardships.<\/p>\n
