Never stepped foot on his turf. There was no conflict of interest. No overlap. Yet, he brought his fight across lines that were not his to cross.\u201d Her voice is faint when it comes. \u201cHe wouldn\u2019t do that.\u201d \u201cHe did.\u201d \u201cHe was loyal.\u201d \u201cHe betrayed his Pakhan\u2019s organization,\u201d I say.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen he tried to dismantle mine. He was planning to bring down two kingdoms. He was a fool.\u201d Her eyes fill. She wipes them quickly, before any tears can fall. \u201cHe was innocent,\u201d she whispers. \u201cYou keep saying that.\u201d \u201cBecause he kept saying it,\u201d she snaps, her voice breaking. \u201cEven with a gun to his head.<\/p>\n

Even when they had him on his knees like a dog, he kept saying it. Over and over.\u201d Her fingers curl into fists on the file. \u201cHis last words were that he was innocent. He looked at me, and he said it like he could convince the world. I am sure his intention was never to betray anyone.\u201d I let the silence hang between us. Heavy. Tainted. I do not tell her how many men swear their innocence at the end.<\/p>\n

How many scream it when the barrel touches their forehead. It means nothing when weighed against evidence. I lean forward. \u201cJustice doesn\u2019t care about intention. Only action. And his actions buried men I bled for.\u201d She closes the file and looks away. Her shoulders sag like the weight of truth is crushing her spine. I do not comfort her; instead, I stand and let her see the fury she caused by breaking into my office.<\/p>\n
