This technique has some disadvantages. There is a power dissipation in the resistor. The dissipated power increases the temperature of the sense resistor. The change of temperature changes the value of the sense resistor. Therefore, the I-V relation for this conversion technique may not be quite linear. Hall Effect sensors can be used to convert a current signal into a voltage signal as well.

In this section, we will make an ammeter with the ACS712 current sensor. The ACS712 current sensor is a product of Allegro MicroSystems that can be used for precise measurement of both AC and DC currents. This sensor is based on the Hall Effect, and the IC has an integrated Hall Effect device. The breakout board of ACS712 is shown in Figure 3-16. Figure 3-16 ACS712 breakout board The breakout board shown in Figure 3-16 works with 5 V. The output of this sensor is half of the input voltage, that is, 2.5 V, when the input current is 0 A.

Therefore, if you connect the output of the sensor to an analog pin of Arduino, something around 511–512 must be read. The sensitivity and operating range of different models of ACS712 are shown in Table 3-1. For instance, when +1 A is passed through ACS712 ELC-30, its output changes to 2.5 + 0.066 = 2.566 V, and when –2 A is passed, the output voltage will be 2.5 – 2 × 0.066 = 2.368 V.

Table 3-1 Characteristics of different types of ACS712 ACS712 Model Operating Range Sensitivity 185 mV/A 100 mV/A 66 mV/A Let’s make a DC ammeter with this sensor. Upload the following code to the board. This code measures the current 50 times and displays the average of measured values.

Jump start your path to discovery with the Apress Maker Innovations series!
