And his. \u201cThat\u2019s not your concern.\u201d \u201cNeyu said you\u2019ve been gone for a while. She meant you hadn\u2019t returned to the burning place, didn\u2019t she?\u201d Saer blinked, trying to remember when that particular conversation with Neyu took place.<\/p>\n

Weeks ago, when she\u2019d first arrived. His stomach clenched. \u201cHow in frenzied Hells\u2014?\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve gotten better at hiding.\u201d \u201cIt would have been better if you\u2019d stayed quiet.\u201d \u201cReally?\u201d Saer grunted and refocused on sorting through another pile of parchments. He already warred with distracting himself away from Neyu\u2019s absence and fate. He had no patience left for the spirit.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing the two of you together was interesting.\u201d \u201cWatch yourself,\u201d he hissed between clenched teeth. Ruki\u2019s essence pushed itself from the side of the hut\u2014as if it had physical form\u2014and approached him. \u201cOr what? You\u2019ll take me to the burning place as you took my father?\u201d \u201cIt would be a pleasure to take you there,\u201d Saer lied. \u201cThen do it.\u201d Ruki\u2019s soul threw its hands out from its sides. \u201cI\u2019m ready!\u201d<\/p>\n

Saer\u2019s lip curled. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what you\u2019re asking for.\u201d \u201cAnything is better than this!\u201d Huffing a sharp breath from his nose, Saer cleared off the rest of the papyrus from the desk, storing rolled parchments in his pockets. \u201cYou haven\u2019t gone back since you took my father.\u201d Saer\u2019s fingers spasmed, his only tell that it surprised him for Ruki\u2019s spirit to have noticed. The soul\u2019s voice persisted at his back. \u201cI\u2019ve gotten to know all your kin through the decades.<\/p>\n

One of them comes in at the last minute, every time, to take\u2026what do you call them? Your harvests? But you don\u2019t return anymore, do you? And I can\u2019t follow them when I\u2019m dedicated to you.\u201d Saer strode through the hut\u2019s exit and slammed the door behind him. He gestured with a harsh wave of his hand, setting the shelter aflame.<\/p>\n

This book eviscerated me in the best way. Contradictory? Maybe.
