He found it invigorating. Or maybe that was due to breaking through the tension between him and Gabby. He glanced down at her. She and Freya were carrying on a conversation about Jack. Gabby might be doing all the talking, but he knew his dog well enough to see understanding in Freya’s intelligent eyes. You want to feel useful and you want to use your art for a reason, so when men you respect did not offer that to you, it hurt.

Ruthie thought she’d been whispering, but Andri had caught her words. It’d been the smack upside his head he needed. Their friendship ran deep. An awkward kiss shouldn’t have destroyed it, and he knew a way to begin rebuilding it. Andri cleared his throat as they turned into Main Street. “As I said, I don’t like the idea of bringing you to a crime scene, but I agree with Ruthie that you need to stay close.” Gabby rested her palm on Freya’s head. “What was the crime?”

Fourteen “Oh, Gabby.” He gently stopped her with a hand to her arm. How could he have been so calloused? Of course she’d be worried about going to a crime scene. Her home was one. “It was just a theft at Joel Jakobsen’s diner. Nothing grisly.” She chewed her lip, weighing his words. He shifted. Should he share the idea Ruthie’s whispered comment had inspired?

“I thought … Your sketches … Maybe you …” He was butchering this olive branch. Her head tilted, wonder lighting her brown eyes. “You want me to help you investigate?” Andri nodded, the rightness of it settling in his chest. “It’s not only an opportunity for you to stay where I can keep you safe. You have a talent, Gabby, and I’d be foolish not to ask for your help.”

Gabriella’s smile bloomed, smacking into him like a wave. “You won’t regret this, Andri. It’s the least I can do for you.” He grunted to cover unwelcome emotions. “Let’s go. Jakobsen is angry enough without us making him wait longer.” They crossed the street to where Jakobsen paced in front of his family’s diner. While Andri had never considered his former schoolmate’s looks, he couldn’t help doing so now since Gabby walked at his side. Would she prefer a beanpole over a boulder?

Not that Jakobsen was skinny, exactly, but Andri was large in every way. Not fat, just … big. And Gabby was not. Or perhaps she would like brown hair instead of fair, like that cop who escorted her here. Even Jakobsen edged toward a darker blond than Andri’s hair. Jakobsen was also a successful business owner, not a policeman. Andri barely held in a growl.

In Confessions to a Stranger , Danielle Grandinetti weaves a tale that is at once mysterious, suspenseful, romantic, and inspiring … Filled with truths that made me ponder my own life, this novel is a lovely start to what is sure to be a wonderful series!

—Heidi Chiavaroli, Carol Award-Winning Author of The Orchard House Danielle Grandinetti has crafted a wonderful tale of suspense and romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
