Whatever secret project he is working on, they all deem it necessary. So, Callian and I are the muscle today. “Okay, the last long table needs to be shifted under the old fig tree, for Hanola and her special guests,” Catori says, looking between Callian and me. “Fine,” Callian says, pushing a flower behind Nirri’s ear. We make our way to the last table.

“I promised Imani I would help her train with the knives this afternoon. I’ll see you guys later,” Catori says, sprinting off to the training area. I grab one end of the table, and Callian picks up his end. We shuffle our way under the oldest, widest, and most impressive tree in the village. Callian drops his end, and the table jerks in my hands.

His face is stone. “Just because the girls have forgiven you, Rayner, doesn’t mean the rest of us have.” “By ‘the rest of us,’ you mean you and Harm?” I hold his burning stare. “Something like that.” “Let it go, Callian,” Nirri says, resting her hand on his arm. He looks at her for a moment before stalking off.

She throws me an apologetic smile and follows him. With no other pre-party chores, I head to the training area. Imani and Catori are circling each other in the sparring ring. A permanent grimace sits on Imani’s face, her bad leg slightly slower than her good one. She is breathing through gritted teeth. Always the fighter. But this time, I suppose, she is fighting for herself. They break apart, and Catori calls it. “Enough for today. We’ll do some more tomorrow.

For now, Jeselle can help you out in the range.” She tilts her head toward the long stretch of grass ending in six targets. Jeselle and Miya are both there, firing arrows. They are fast. Jeselle laughs as her arrows find their mark quicker than Miya’s. Imani heads in their direction, and I grab a sword from the weapons rack, stepping into the ring with Catori.

The corner of her mouth pulls up. “What was that move you did in the tower? The one where you started off on the ground?” I ask. Instantly, her smile falls. She sheathes her knives and walks over to the rack. Hands gripping it, her back to me, she doesn’t speak. I walk over, standing behind her. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean anything by it.” She turns slowly, eyes scanning my face.

Copyright © 2024 by R. M. Muller. OceanofPDF.com OceanofPDF.com T Chapter 1 HARM imber explodes to splinters on impact against the stone hearth seconds after the chair leaves my hands. All around me, screams. My voice, my pain. I can’t stop it. The fire that rips through my veins erodes a hole in my chest with every breath. She’s gone. She left. With Mason. Staggering around our small home, I land hard against the dresser, spin around, and rip the blankets from the bed.

Our bed. Guttural sobs replace the roaring coming from my chest. Every breath is fire, and my body tenses with every move. I stumble to the hearth and toss the blankets into the fire, smoke billowing around the folds of cloth and fur. My trembling hands press against the stone mantel, and the heat burns my palms.

The sensations barely register; my hands feel numb. “Harm.” Callian pulls at my arm. I can’t move. He lingers for a moment, then disappears behind me. Catori is speaking, so softly, then she’s gone. I replay Imani’s face, the look on it as Callian dragged me from the tower.

Her somber eyes that only just caught mine as I was hauled away by Callian and Catori. A last longing look at me before she betrayed me entirely.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
