Another new face tonight?\u201d she smiles brightly. \u201cYes, this is Katie, Miles\u2019s mother.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s good to meet you,\u201d the nurse says. \u201cYou too,\u201d Katie says. \u201cHow has she been today?\u201d The nurse tips her head from side to side. \u201cShe\u2019s been all over the place.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure exactly what you\u2019ll be getting. She\u2019s in her room, but we can have someone bring her out.\u201d \u201cNo, that\u2019s fine. We\u2019ll head down. I have a new blanket and puzzle books for her, plus some pictures to add to her wall.\u201d \u201cSure thing, hon.<\/p>\n

Let us know if you need anything.\u201d \u201cWill do.\u201d I pick up the bag of stuff I got her and nod down the hall where her room is. My mom always loved blankets. When I got our stuff out of storage after traveling, I counted forty-seven throw blankets. We ended up donating a bunch of them to a homeless shelter.<\/p>\n

We both picked a few favorites to keep. Mom has most of them, but I have three, plus one more in a box in my closet. It\u2019s the one my dad used during chemo, and all these years later, it still smells like him. When I need that comfort, I pull the blanket out and hold it for a little while.<\/p>\n

I knock on the door, then walk into the semi-private room my mom is in. This is a newer nursing home, and Mom was on the waitlist here for months. I was grateful when she finally got in, though. The rooms are bigger and nicer than many other nursing homes I toured. The semi-private rooms are actually semi-private instead of having a curtain dividing them. There\u2019s a shared open space at the entrance to the room with hooks for visitor bags and coats.<\/p>\n

This is also where the bathroom is. Then it splits off and a curtain closes off each mini room with a wall between them. The other woman in here is as close as my mother has to a friend. I\u2019m not sure they remember each other day-to-day, but they get along fine and enjoy doing things together.<\/p>\n
