Maybe there\u2019s a way to get past the lock without tearing down the door. I pull out my phone and scroll to her name. \u201cEl?\u201d I ask when she answers. \u201cTwice in one day, Cord. I don\u2019t want to risk Asher getting jealous.\u201d \u201cI\u2019ll handle him.\u201d I realize as soon as the words leave my mouth that was the wrong thing to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat will you give me not to tell him that?\u201d Fuck. \u201cCan we pretend this conversation just started?\u201d She laughs. \u201cYou\u2019re lucky I have such a big crush on you. What do you need?\u201d Thank god. \u201cIs there another way to get past a keypad entry?\u201d She\u2019s quiet for a moment. \u201cCan you see the manufacturer\u2019s name or a serial number on the device?\u201d I lean over and peer at the keypad. When I spot a label, I snap a picture with my phone and send it to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust sent you a picture.\u201d \u201cOkay, give me a few minutes. Depending on how they have it configured, I might be able to hack it through the app. I\u2019ll call you back when I have something.\u201d I hang up and look at Zeke. \u201cThis may take a few minutes.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not going anywhere.\u201d I catch his gaze wandering up and down the street. \u201cWhat\u2019s the deal here?\u201d he asks after a minute. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe street. It\u2019s empty.\u201d I hadn\u2019t told him everything I learned from the captive. \u201cApparently Thalium is using a glamour to block off the street.\u201d \u201cAre you fucking kidding me? Dante would hit the roof.\u201d He rolls his eyes. \u201cWhat am I saying? If he were around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThink that would get the attention of the Black Guild?\u201d \u201cIn a perfect world,\u201d he replies. \u201cBut I don\u2019t know about these guys. So far I haven\u2019t seen any indication they\u2019re doing a damn thing about our problem.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s what I thought. I\u2019m beginning to think they only came here for the drug.\u201d \u201cYou may be right.\u201d He taps the crossbow against his leg. \u201cKinda makes this stuff illegal contraband.\u201d \u201cWouldn\u2019t be the first we\u2019ve dealt with.\u201d<\/p>\n

We wait in silence for a couple of minutes until my phone rings. \u201cYeah?\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re only going to have one shot at this so make it right,\u201d Elaine says. \u201cUse this code. Nine-oh-seven-two-five-three.\u201d I punch in the numbers. There\u2019s a soft click, then the door pops open. \u201cThanks,\u201d I say as I hang up and tuck the phone in my pocket.<\/p>\n
