In fact, she only knew he had a dad, and that was due to their frequent visits to the diner together. She’d never thought about his family life before, she realised. Blake jogged to keep up with Spud—he ran ahead, weaving around the spectators and cabins. The other kids chased after them, but they didn’t get too close, almost as if they were afraid Blake would bite them.

Spud veered onto a muddy lane between two houses. He was out of sight by the time she reached the muddy alleyway. Her white jeans were caked in brown slime up to her calves when she got to the end of the lane and saw one house looming ahead.

It was separate from the others. Higher up on a hardened hill—a double- story terrace house with a chipped porch. Compared to the other houses on the lot, it was well-cared for. A few of the windows were new and the front door was sanded. On the patchy lawn at the front of the house were two motorcycles.

It was there that Spud rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet. He stepped to the side, revealing Chase Jackson’s back. Chase crouched down beside his motorbike. He appeared to be replacing parts.

No part of this book may be used or reproduced in any manner whatsoever without written permission—this includes scanning and/or unauthorised distribution—except in case of brief quotations used in reviews and/or academic articles, in which case quotations are permitted. Frank’s Diner was one of the few places in the small swamp town of Belle- Vue to find legal work, and she’d worked there since her junior year. When she pushed inside, she spotted Frank counting money at the cash register on the bar.

“You’re late!” barked Frank. He didn’t look up from the stacks of money. “Ten minutes. Consider it docked off your pay.” “I’m early,” said Blake. “I don’t start for another fifteen minutes.” He glanced up at the plastic clock above the door. “Well, since you’re here, you can get started on those dishes out back. We got hammered today.” “Whatever,” she mumbled. Frank wouldn’t pay her for the early start, but if she declined he would slash her shifts.

Biting her tongue, she dipped under the bench and pushed through the swing doors to the kitchen. The kitchen wasn’t much easier on the eyes than the diner itself. Where there weren’t red and black tiles blinding her, there were moss patches on the floor to be scrubbed, and stacks of dishes sloped in the sink.

The weekend cook, Jimmy, chopped vegetables on the metal counter. Flora, a middle-aged mother of three from the other side of town—the bayous—picked at stale chips by the lockers. “What’s cooking, Jimmy?” Blake sniffed in the direction of a bubbling pot on the stovetop. “Smells good.” “Shrimp stew surprise,” he said, flashing her a crooked grin.
