As luck would have it, A. E. England Pontiac was directly in our line of vision. Pointing to the dealership, I grinned and said, \u201cWatch this.\u201d For a while we just looked over the cars in the lot, then, feeling more bold, we strolled through the showroom. The expressions on the salesmen\u2019s faces showed that they were not impressed with us.<\/p>\n<p>With our blue jeans, sandals, and casual blouses, coupled with the fact that my size and ponytail made me look fourteen, I was sure that they thought we were a couple of kids playing hookey from school. None of them hurried over to see if they could help us. After a short time spent just looking, a midnight blue 1963 Grand Prix caught my eye. \u201cCome on, Sheri,\u201d I said as I spotted the car. \u201cI\u2019ve found one I like.\u201d When we got to it, I opened the door and looked inside.<\/p>\n<p>To me it looked like the fanciest piece of machinery in the world. It had a leather interior and wood-covered accessories. Every\u00ac thing about it shouted class. This would be the ultimate vehicle in which to cruise. \u201cSheri, wake me if I\u2019m dreaming, but this is our car!\u201d \u201cYeah,\u201d she agreed, \u201cI can see us in this one.\u201d Across the room, the salesmen had taken all they could. One of them broke from the pack and crossed the showroom. He walked directly up to us and said, \u201cExcuse me, would you mind not putting your fingers all over the car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, excuse me,\u201d I said as I smiled sweetly, \u201cI didn\u2019t mean to be doing anything wrong. By the way, how much does it cost, and what kind is it?\u201d \u201cIt is a Pontiac Grand Prix, our top-of-the-line model, and it is very expensive.\u201d \u201cI want to buy it,\u201d I grinned. Looking at me as if he thought I was a mental case, he impatiently replied, \u201cA car like this costs a great deal of money.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m afraid that you couldn\u2019t afford it.\u201d At that point I went over to the sticker, looked at the bottom line, smiled back at the man, and said, \u201cI\u2019ll take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>to share this often unsavory story, and when the pieces of my bizarre life begin to fall into an understandable perspective, you will know why it has taken me as long as it has to grasp it for myself, much less to tell it.\u201d \u2014LAUREN CHAPIN \u201cI WATCHED LAUREN GROW UP ON THE SET OF Father Knows Best.<\/p>\n<p>I loved and respected her then, and I do now.
