Grace always needed something. Jess and Melissa had taken literally her pledge to support them with encouragement and often more practical tasks. Bob, even, was constantly on her back about something or other to do with professional development and teacher standards. Sofia, on the other hand, wanted very little if you discounted wonderful food, sex, and the occasional hand with Angie\u2019s shopping or walking Percy.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d be waiting outside in the Mini every other Friday night with dinner prepared, and they\u2019d ensconce themselves in their own world for two days. As the final day of term mercifully arrived, V was about three pounds heavier and finding her jeans were a little snug from all the pasta, but a whole load lighter in other areas for having some space\u2014and some fun\u2014 even if it had meant a few late nights doing work and chores to make up the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cMum, can I wear my Rudolph jumper today?\u201d Grace already had it on and stood in the doorway flicking his red bobble nose. She\u2019d paired it with jeans and the Converse Jess and Melissa had bought for her birthday. It had become a sort of annual tradition that they got a new pair, always in pink, and she loved them even though they clashed with the red sweater.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can wear whatever you like, so long as you hurry.\u201d As V shooed her along the hallway, she tried to squeeze the button of her jeans at the same time. Both schools were having a casual clothing day as part of an entire district charity event. You paid a pound to wear whatever you liked, and it was coinciding with the end of term Christmas meal.<\/p>\n

V tucked a coin into the pocket of Grace\u2019s trousers and made sure she had one for herself, then pulled her winter coat from the peg. \u201cDo you have everything?\u201d \u201cYes. Don\u2019t need a lunchbox, I\u2019m having turkeeeey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Picking the blue or green version shouldn\u2019t be hard, and yet\u2026 Slamming it shut with a flourish, she fell forward onto the bed and buried her face in the duvet. Years of work to get here, to her first real proper teaching job, and all she could think about was what to wear.<\/p>\n

Had she finally lost her mind? Had pages of student attainment statistics and lesson plans tipped her over the edge? Sight was imperative if Grace were about to launch an attack, but she\u2019d also freshly washed it as a confidence boost for her first day and wanted to save her efforts from sticky little fingers.<\/p>\n

The hinges creaked as Grace inched open the door. \u201cI can\u2019t sleep.\u201d She threw it wide now and bunny hopped across the floor. Then there was a little squeal as she flung herself at the bed. \u201cI\u2019m too excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
