To be honest, I\u2019m kinda liking that the Spirits keep her on her toes. Even if I feel like they\u2019re conspiring against me. The older woman narrows her eyes and purses her thins lips, the wrinkles forming even deeper lines around her mouth. \u201cYou\u2019re still here.\u201d \u201cYeah, still in the right place, just wrong time.\u201d I fall into the faded zebra print chair, dust plumes up like a volcanic eruption. \u201cThe Spirits haven\u2019t given away any secrets on how I can get back to the right spot in my life, have they?<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong, there\u2019s some upside to being here, my badass car, cool house, a full head of hair\u2026\u201d I twirl my finger around a loose curl. Astrid shuffles behind the crooked checkout desk and leans on her forearms. \u201cHa!\u201d she scoffs. \u201cIn case you haven\u2019t noticed, the Spirits are like bored, naughty children. Eternity is a very long time, so they get their kicks any way they can.\u201d I tilt my head. \u201cWho are these Spirits anyway?\u201d Not that I believe any of this, but if this is what the afterlife has to offer, then I can totally get behind messing with psychics.<\/p>\n

She shrugs. \u201cIt\u2019s like a chorus. Some are my ancestors, other seers who guide me from the Beyond. Some are souls who lived on other planes of existence, places that still believe in magic.\u201d Astrid huffs a laugh. \u201cAnd others just like to drop in and stir metaphysical shit up.\u201d I tilt my head and narrow my eyes. \u201cWhich ones are behind this?\u201d I wave a hand around my head.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ones from another plane? I can\u2019t imagine there\u2019s anyone else in this world dealing with\u2026this level of metaphysical shit.\u201d Not that I can put words around exactly what I\u2019m dealing with. My mom always complained about hot flashes. Is this a bad case of the flash forwards? \u201cYou\u2019d be surprised. So, are you here to torment me alongside these insufferable Spirits?\u201d<\/p>\n
