Scott was waiting for her at a corner table, when she got to the Saint Regis five minutes late. Traffic had been heavy, and she\u2019d taken a cab. She was wearing black slacks and a striking red coat. He saw her immediately when she walked in, and he stood up to greet her. He was struck again by how beautiful she was.<\/p>\n

Her cheeks were pink from the cold, and her eyes were bright. Veronica ordered white wine and he had a gin and tonic, and after they chatted for a few minutes, she took the contract out of her Herm\u00e8s bag. As he looked at it with her, their heads close together, he could smell her perfume. It had a spicy, musky scent that was mysterious and sexy, and he loved being near her.<\/p>\n

She had an aura of sophistication about her, faintly reminiscent of her mother\u2019s, but in a more youthful style. Scott hadn\u2019t thought of Felicia as sexy, but he\u2019d thought she was very beautiful, and Veronica was both. \u201cDoes that make sense to you now?\u201d he asked her about one of the deal points in the contract. She said she wasn\u2019t sure and he explained it to her again, and then she got it.<\/p>\n

She was the first of the nine people he killed. He injured eight more before the police shot and killed him. Her daughters were devastated. They were all close to her, and their mother was the only other family they had. Their father had died in a commercial airline crash when they were between two and ten years old.<\/p>\n

The three oldest girls, Charlotte, Quinne, and Olivia, still had a few vague memories of their father, but the two youngest, Veronica and Isabelle, had been too young to remember him.
