Virgil pulled the Range Rover to the shoulder and killed the engine. The county road behind them was empty in both directions\u2026 the kind of empty that didn\u2019t happen by accident\u2026and not in a place that showed so much traffic on paper. Murton stepped out and stretched and looked around while trying to look like he wasn\u2019t looking around. \u201cIs it just me, or does it feel like we just drove off the map?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s still the map,\u201d Virgil said. \u201cThey just decided people didn\u2019t need to read this part anymore.\u201d Mayo closed his folder. \u201cThe parcels Patty and that anonymous caller mentioned? They\u2019re close. Maybe a mile south of here.\u201d Virgil nodded. \u201cWe\u2019ll have to go on foot.\u201d Murton adjusted his jacket.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, we\u2019ve done it before, except now we\u2019re older. Shouldn\u2019t some wisdom be kicking in right about now?\u201d \u201cIt already has,\u201d Mayo said. \u201cIt must have.\u201d \u201cWhat makes you say that?\u201d Virgil asked. \u201cWell, my name is on the door and you guys have made me a full partner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murton clapped Mayo on the back. \u201cI don\u2019t want to burst your bubble, but that\u2019s not wisdom on our part. It\u2019s more likely the result of too many blows to the head. What did you say your name was again?\u201d Mayo ignored him and stepped over the rail, then Virgil and Murton did as well.<\/p>\n

They moved down the hill and through the brush, following the faint suggestion of a path that wasn\u2019t a trail, and wasn\u2019t man-made\u2026just a line where the grass had been bent down and never stood back up. The river corridor stretched ahead, dry in the spring, the stones exposed and pale.<\/p>\n

Halfway down the slope, Murton stopped and said, \u201cHold on.\u201d Then he tipped his head and listened. A sound rose from somewhere deeper in the trees. It wasn\u2019t far off or loud, but it was unmistakable: The sound of an engine idling low, like a car\u2019s engine kept running when someone didn\u2019t plan on staying long. \u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s a tractor,\u201d Mayo said. Virgil nodded. \u201cNo, it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

The rhythm\u2019s wrong.\u201d They stayed still, listening. Then the engine revved once, settled again\u2026and shortly after, the sound faded as the vehicle moved away. \u201cThink that was a warning?\u201d Murton said. Virgil shook his head. \u201cI doubt it. Warnings are usually more direct. I think that was simply meant to be noticed.\u201d They continued down until the riverbed leveled out.<\/p>\n
