Even now, in the clear light of day, she couldn’t believe she’d given in so easily. The smell of coffee drifted in from the kitchen. Nia slipped out of bed and grabbed one of Dimitri’s t-shirts from a drawer. It hung to mid-thigh on her, big enough to be decent. Dimitri stood at the stove, his back to her.

He wore only sweatpants, his massive upper body on full display. The muscles in his back shifted as he flipped something in a pan. “Morning,” Nia said, announcing her presence. Dimitri turned, his eyes immediately finding her bare legs beneath his shirt. Something flickered in his gaze—heat, possession, approval.

“My shirt looks good on you,” he said, his accent thicker in the morning. Nia crossed her arms, suddenly self-conscious. “It was the first thing I grabbed.” “I like.” Dimitri turned back to the stove. “Coffee in pot. Food ready soon.” Nia poured herself coffee and sat at the small kitchen table. Outside, the sky was gray with early morning light.

A normal Tuesday in a very abnormal week. “What’s the plan for today?” she asked, wrapping her hands around the warm mug. “Meeting with Viktor at noon,” Dimitri said, sliding eggs and toast onto two plates. “You come with me.” Nia’s stomach knotted. After last night at the club, she’d hoped to avoid Viktor for a while.

“Do I have to?” “Da.” Dimitri set a plate in front of her. “Viktor wants to discuss business. Wants you there.” “Why would he want me at a business meeting? I don’t know anything about your… work.” Dimitri sat across from her, his face serious. “Not about knowledge. About control. He wants to see if I keep you in line.”

“Keep me in line?” Nia’s temper flared. “What does that mean?” “It means be quiet. Be respectful. Follow my lead.” Dimitri held her gaze. “Viktor is not man you want to make angry.” The warning in his voice was clear. Viktor might present a friendly face, but underneath was something dangerous. “Fine,” Nia said, stabbing at her eggs.

“I’ll be good.” Dimitri nodded, satisfied. “Eat. Then shower. We leave in two hours.” After breakfast, they showered together, a strangely domestic routine that ended with Dimitri pressing Nia against the tile wall, his mouth hot on her neck as the water pounded down around them.

Copyright © 2025 by N. House pour is one ounce. You got two.” The man leaned over the bar, his breath reeking of alcohol and bad decisions.

“You giving me attitude?” “No sir,” she said, sliding another shot toward him. “This one’s on the house. Last call’s in ten minutes.” The drunk man’s anger melted into a sloppy grin. “That’s more like it, sweetheart.” Nia turned away, wiping her hands on the small black apron tied around her waist. The Knockout was the kind of sports bar where glass broke more often than hearts, and tonight was no exception. Friday nights were always the worst—payday meant drunk men with wandering hands and short tempers.

She glanced at the ancient clock above the bar. Eleven fifty. Ten more minutes until last call, then an hour of cleanup before she could drag herself home to her tiny apartment. Her feet ached in the black sneakers she wore for shifts, and her lower back throbbed from eight hours of standing. But the wad of tips in her pocket made it worth it—another $200 closer to next semester’s tuition. “Looking good tonight, Nia.” Tony, the owner, nodded approvingly as he counted the register. “Friday crowd loves you.”

“Friday crowd loves anything with breasts and a pulse,” she shot back, but smiled despite herself.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
