“Let\u2019s get out of here before something else decides to make a dramatic entrance,” I suggested, leading the way back through the tight exit. As we walked, the amulet felt heavy in my pocket. Kaiya chuckled beside me, her boots echoing on the stone floor. \u201cYou know, for someone who jokes about everything, you take this stuff pretty seriously.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s because, underneath this charming exterior, I\u2019m actually full of deep, existential thoughts,\u201d I quipped, the smirk audible in my voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd here I thought you were just full of caffeine and witty comebacks,\u201d Aeira added, her laughter bouncing off the walls and following us out of the darkness and back into the light. OceanofPDF.com here was a bounce to Kaiya\u2019s step as we left the cavern with another piece of the amulet in our possession. She waved a hand in the air and said, “We should call Brylan.<\/p>\n

We’ve found the amulet piece. We can make it back to our hotel in time for a nice dinner.\u201d Something niggled at the back of my mind. Or rather, the magical side of me. There was nothing concrete I could latch onto to explain the feeling.<\/p>\n

It was like a bad toothache, persistent and impossible to ignore. It felt like there was a veil or something blocking me from fully understanding if there was another piece on the island. It seemed unlikely that there would be, but I couldn\u2019t deny that\u2019s what it felt like. \u201cI’m not so sure we’ve got everything yet,\u201d I murmured. My eyes scanned the horizon as I felt an inexplicable pull.<\/p>\n

“What do you mean?” Kaiya asked, her brows knitting together in confusion, while Aeira joined her side, her expression mirroring Kaiya’s concern. “I… I just feel like there’s more here. Something we’re missing,” I explained vaguely, my own understanding as murky as the shadows we had dispersed. Without waiting for a response, I started walking. I was driven by a hunch that tugged at the very core of my relic keeper instincts.<\/p>\n

Behind me, I heard the hurried steps of Kaiya and Aeira catching up. “Where are you going, Nylah? What is going on?” Aeira pressed, her voice filled with a mix of intrigue and anxiety. “I don’t know exactly,” I admitted.<\/p>\n

Sweat poured down my face and burned my eyes. I felt like a roasting turkey as I hacked at the ground, creating a line to stop the tempest of flame and fury from consuming everything between Asheville and me. I loved the small mountain town. A lot of talented artists called the town home.<\/p>\n

It was bad enough that the flames were consuming some of the most gorgeous forests on the planet. \u201cCap wants us on the hose,\u201d Kaiya called out. At least, that\u2019s what I assumed she said based on where she was gesturing. The roar of the wildfire made it difficult to hear with much clarity. My fingers were cramped around the pick ax I\u2019d been slamming into the ground over and over as we dug the line. I practically had to pry them loose. \u201cThank the gods!\u201d<\/p>\n

I exclaimed. I handed my tool to another firefighter and moved to the line of people holding the hoses. I took a drink of cold water before we switched places. The once tranquil woods had been a sanctuary of verdant life. It now stood as a blazing battleground. Each tree was a defiant soldier in the face of an unrelenting enemy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
