The day-to-day operations of the firm were taken care of by several organizational levels beneath her. After her discovery of the bizarre items she’d learned regarding her long-lost relative Susan Berg, Neagley had made an impromptu decision. She had forwarded everything she’d learned about the woman, not including the genealogy report, to one of the best cyber trackers at the firm.

A young man who always wore jeans and a black turtleneck sweater, even in summer, whose name was Tab. He was probably too young to remember the drink, or the actor, but perhaps his parents were fans of one or both. She gave Tab her phone number and told him to keep an eye out for anything related to Susan Berg.

With that done, Neagley returned home and put together a bag that should last her a week or so. She had booked a flight on a private jet – she had purchased a jet card that basically gave her so many private flights per year. She still had quite a few banked, so she took the opportunity to fly from Chicago to Detroit. Upon landing in the Motor City, she’d arranged for a four-wheel drive vehicle to be waiting for her.

In this case, it was a General Motors product, which felt appropriate. To be more specific, it was a GMC Yukon. A big, heavy vehicle that could plow through mud and snow if required. Neagley stashed her bag and punched in the address last associated with Susan Berg.

She left the airport and headed toward the city. Neagley had spent some time in Detroit on various cases. She’d always felt that Detroit didn’t seem like a Midwestern city, it felt more East Coast. Kind of like a hard-nosed New Jersey type of place. It wasn’t an unfriendly community, but it also wasn’t one that had that kind of super polite personality of say, Fargo, or small-town Wisconsin.

Detroiters were polite, up until you crossed them, and then they would kick your ass or die trying. As she drove, she considered whether she was being impetuous; dropping everything to chase after a first cousin once removed. She’d been down this road before once, when a former employee had duped her as part of a criminal conspiracy. This time, though, it felt different.

There was no denying the genealogy service she’d used. They had no skin in the game. So the match was most likely very real. Besides, she had some extra time on her hands. She hadn’t heard from Jack Reacher in a while, and the rest of the Special Investigators had been relatively quiet since their last adventure. So, she felt fairly justified in heading to Michigan looking for one Susan Berg.

“Dan Ames writes fast-paced, gripping tales that capture you from Page One and hold you enthralled till the last word. Ames and his private eye novel DEAD WOOD recall early James Ellroy: a fresh attitude and voice and the heady rush of boundless yearning and ambition. Ames delivers a vivid evocation of time and place in a way that few debut authors achieve, nailing the essence of his chosen corner of high-tone Michigan.

He also deftly dodges the pitfalls that make so much contemporary private detective fiction a mixed bag and nostalgia-freighted misfire. Ames’ detective has family; he’s steady. He’s not another burned-out, booze- hound hanging on teeth and toenails to the world and smugly wallowing in his own ennui.
