She stood at the altar beside her sister, with Mary, Kitty and Lydia garbed in their finest in a line at her left. She unobtrusively wiped a tear that slid down her cheek as she listened to Jane and Bingley exchange their marriage vows before God. Among all the sisters, only Lydia remained dry eyed. Elizabeth failed to wonder at it, and passed it off as Lydia still pouting over Wickham. She listened to Mr. Collins speak of God’s love and how marriages are an extension of that love, then cast a glance at Darcy in the first row of pews.

She fought to maintain her composure even after he winked at her. Mrs. Bennet also wept at the second wedding in her family, not bothering to conceal her tears. Mr. Bennet, beside her, sat with a small smile as he watched another of his daughters wed the man she loved.

Elizabeth could not help but wonder how much he enjoyed seeing his daughters leave Longbourn one by one. “I now pronounce you husband and wife,” Mr. Collins intoned. Elizabeth brought her attention back to the ceremony, and grinned as Bingley lifted Jane’s veil and planted a soft kiss to her lips. Now they can truly fulfill their love for one another.

She remembered her own wedding night, and hoped Jane would find the same sweet attentions Darcy gave her. At the reception, Mrs. Bennet imbibed of the sherry, and Elizabeth made it her duty to prevent her mother from embarrassing herself. Her father had hired a carriage to bring them to the wedding and then back, and she planned to see her entire family onto and heading home before her mother disgraced them all.

“Lizzy, dear,” Mrs. Bennet exclaimed, her glass of sherry sloshing, “you should be dancing. It is Jane’s wedding after all.” Elizabeth glanced toward Darcy, who appeared engrossed in conversation with Mr. Collins as well as several others. Jane and Bingley danced, as did Mary and Kitty, while Lydia sat with her friends and talked in low tones.

“Darcy is occupied, Mama,” she replied. “I wish to stay with you, as I do not know when I will have the opportunity to see you again.” “Or perhaps you simply wish to make sure I do not drink too much sherry.” Her mouth dropped until she saw the twinkle in her mother’s eyes. “That, too, Mama,” she replied with a laugh.

“May I have some?” “Of course, dear.” Elizabeth sipped her sherry with her mother, and still managed to prevent Mrs. Bennet from overindulging. And he thinks so little of my family.” She knew he had left the Collins estate after making his proposal, and she did not want to see him again. Ever. Walking again, the sunlight soothing her frazzled nerves, Elizabeth pondered the implications of her refusal.

A man as wealthy as Mr. Darcy, with an income of ten thousand pounds a year, should have given her motive enough to marry him. “I do not love him,” she mused, gazing up at the wispy clouds above her. “He is proud, cold and selfish. How can any woman marry such a man?” “Lizzy?” Turning, Elizabeth found her friend, Charlotte Collins, hurrying across the grounds toward her. “I have been looking all over for you,” Charlotte stated, panting lightly with the exertion.

“What are you doing?” “Just walking,” Elizabeth replied, ambling on with Charlotte beside her.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
