When Rafael opens the door, my kids take off running again and I am afraid that they’ll leave a steady trail of destruction in their wake. Thankfully when they got to the living room, which was on the other side of the foyer, they came to an abrupt stop.

Both kids were marveling at the large living room. “Wow, Mom look, that’s the biggest couch I’ve ever seen!” Rae said while frantically waving her pointer finger in the direction of a black leather sectional. To be fair, I’m thirty years old and it was probably the biggest couch I’ve ever seen too. It could probably fit fifteen full-grown men comfortably.

“What’s the point of having a big couch though if you don’t even have a TV?” Huxley questioned with a deep-rooted sadness. But before I could respond and tell him not to be rude Rafael flipped a switch on the wall and a screen extended down from the ceiling. At that point, both kids were yelling and shouting with enthusiasm and naming off all the things they couldn’t wait to watch on the big screen.

I could feel Rafael’s eyes on me, so I turned my head slightly in his direction, noticing his amused grin I smiled back. He probably made their night by showing them that. The kids spent several minutes gawking at the giant projector screen, talking animatedly about all the things they wanted to watch and play on it before we were finally able to round them up to continue the tour.

Rafael took us across the house through the kitchen which was stocked with state-of-the-art appliances and walked towards the sliding glass door. The kitchen was something that cooking enthusiasts would die for, it made me wonder if he spent much time there or if he hired a personal chef. The door was slid open, and Rafael flicked on the outdoor lights. Just outside was a large patio area that had an outdoor dining table with a set of chairs that looked quite comfortable.

The patio also had a large hibachi- style grill and a barbeque smoker next to it. “Mom! We have to eat dinner out here sometime!” Rae shouted as she jumped up and down with excitement. She looked in awe at the plants surrounding the patio. She loved plants, gardening, and spending time outdoors. This is a paradise for her.

Raf hit another switch and the rest of the backyard lit up. He showed the kids over to the large in-ground pool where they professed their plans to swim daily. We walked a path over to a small building that was separate from the house. The door was opened and lights turned on and we walked inside.

No part of this publication may be reproduced, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, including photocopying, recording, or other electronic or mechanical methods, without the prior written permission of the publisher, except as permitted by U.S. copyright law. Many of them show a family that is a long-distant memory. Showcasing something we haven’t been in a long time. We were a happy family once, but that happiness was fleeting after my mother passed away a decade ago.

Reaching my father’s office, I wrap my knuckles against the door, then slowly push it open.
