The best you can hope for.” Fury builds so quickly in my heart, I don’t have time to tamp it down. “You’re all assuming I can survive killing a god king!” I yell. My bangles clang on the stone as I strike my hand against it. It is so ridiculous. All of it. Rune isn’t the least bit fazed. “The king is not a god, Sora,” he says. “That is what we were just talking about—what Seok didn’t tell you.

The crown of Yusan is one of the five relics of the Dragon Lord. The crown protects the wearer through etherum. Joon can still age and feel pain, of course, but he cannot die so long as it rests on his head. It is why man-made weapons are ineffective against Baejkin rulers. And why past assassination attempts have failed. Kings rule until they are tired of life or someone is clever enough to remove their crown.

It is why we’ll need to take it. The spymaster has found someone who can do it. The second it is removed, Joon will be mortal. And that is when you’ll strike.” Rune offers me his arm. I hesitate before taking it. I get my tremors under control and force all thoughts out of my mind, because I can’t show what I’m really thinking or that I’m thinking anything at all. It’s too dangerous. Instead of shaking with anger, I’m now trembling with excitement, but he’ll mistake it for nerves.

“Why are you helping me?” I ask. “Isn’t it obvious?” He stares at me, and there’s sincerity in his gaze. I look to the side quickly and then shake my head. “No.” He swallows, and his expression changes. “I hate Seok, and I want you to be indebted to me.” It wasn’t what he was going to say. My mind floods with what else he could mean. But it doesn’t matter. We take a few steps toward the doors. “Play the game, Sora,” Rune says.

“And lock your lips with Tiyung if it comes down to it.” My stomach drops, as does my jaw. Just the other day, I’d thought about sending Tiyung’s decapitated head in a basket to the Count. But something about the western count suggesting his death isn’t right, either. Still, I allow Rune to escort me back into the villa, because he said something that could change my stars.

I walk in and pretend everything is okay. I sit and smile and eat dinner as if I’m hungry.

This book is a work of fiction.
