At last the stallholder shook his head and held up an empty reel. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I\u2019ve sold it all, ‘m afraid,\u2019 he Shida \u201cOh dear,\u201d said Chloe. The saddlecloth wouldn\u2019t be the same without the gold! \u201cT have plenty of green and blue thread,\u201d the stallholder offered. Chloe shook her head. Those colours wouldn\u2019t show up very well on the blue fab- ric.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever mind,\u201d she said. \u201cThe blue cloth and silver thread will have to do.\u201d She watched as he wrapped them in paper, and tried not to feel too disappoint- ed about the gold thread. The silver will look lovely on its own, she told herself. Suddenly Chloe\u2019s heart skipped a beat. How could she have been so silly? She * hadn\u2019t got any money! She\u2019d left Mina in : such a hurry that she\u2019d forgotten to ask for some. Now what was she going to do?<\/p>\n

The stallholder handed her the parcel. \u201cI-[\u2019’m sorry,\u2019 Chloe stammered. \u201cI\u2019ve made a horrible mistake . . . You see, I don\u2019t have CUT ci The man smiled, looking more like Mr. Barker than ever. \u201cNow, don\u2019t you worry,\u2019 he said. \u201cI know Mina\u2019s family very well. They can pay me tomorrow.\u2019 Chloe breathed a big sigh of relief. \u201cThank you!\u201d<\/p>\n

She took the parcel and turned to climb back into the saddle. \u201cWait a minute,\u2019 said the man. \u201cBefore you go, there\u2019s one more thing …\u201d He held up a little woven bag. \u201cI\u2019m sure you can think of something to do with these.\u201d Chloe peeped into the bag, then gasped 2 in delight. The bag was full of thick silk * ribbons, all in different colours. \u201cThey’re perfect!\u201d she cried. \u201cIll be able to weave them into Flame and Flicker\u2019s manes, just like I do at the riding school!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cT thought you’d find them useful,\u201d said the stallholder with a wink. Chloe climbed back into the saddle and waved goodbye. Flame set off at a brisk canter and Chloe grabbed the pommel with one hand, holding her parcels tight with the other. \u201cGood luck!\u201d the man called after her. 5. Preparing for the Pageant As they drew closer to Mina\u2019s house, Chloe began to feel worried. \u201cWhat if Mina\u2019s really upset about the gold thread?\u201d she wondered. \u201c\u201c\u2018She might not want to make a saddlecloth without it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, we\u2019ve done our best,\u201d said Flame. \u201cThe silver will look nice.\u201d | \u201cBut she was so proud of all that gold stitching,\u2019 Chloe said sadly.<\/p>\n
