New York City\u2019s Metropolitan Museum of Art, for instance, displays his Portrait of Vsevo- lod Mikhailovich Garshin, the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay in Paris has the Portrait of Grand Duke Michael, and Helsinki\u2019s Ateneum Art Museum has many works dating from Repin\u2019s last 30 years, when he lived in Kuokkala, a town less than 30 miles from St. Petersburg. (The Soviets held him in such high regard that the town\u2019s name was changed to Repino after its annexation from Finland.)<\/p>\n

The vast majority of Repin\u2019s paintings are in Russia \u2014 now out of reach for most Western admirers \u2014 and it has been decades since a major retrospective graced a European museum. In 2001, Ilya Repin: Russia\u2019s Secret drew crowds to the Groninger Museum in the Nether- lands, and four years later The World of Ilya Repin and His Contempo- raries appeared at the Von der Heydt-Museum in Wuppertal, Germany.<\/p>\n

In 2023, the governments of China and Russia decided to celebrate 2025 as a year of cultural exchange, agreeing to exhibit some of their greatest artworks as a gesture of friendship.<\/p>\n
