I move from the living room couch to the little balcony in my apartment that looks out on the street. From here I get to watch my neighbors pass by, going in and out of coffee shops and the thrift store housed in beautiful, old and colorful stone buildings. The overcast skies match the loneliness that I woke up with inside of my chest this morning. I normally don\u2019t mind days to myself, but for some odd reason, I wanted to hop on the train and get out to Travis waiting for me with breakfast so we could go for a walk.<\/p>\n

Instead, I went on a walk by myself. Now, I\u2019m talking to my best friend and trying not to admit to how much I miss him knowing he\u2019s so far away and busy. \u201cHe just wants to make sure the baby is getting what it needs,\u201d I mumble. Kandace sucks her teeth. \u201cGirl, have you forgotten where I work?\u201d<\/p>\n

I scrunch my face, but she continues without needing an answer from me. \u201cI\u2019ve seen whole husbands kick their wife out of a hospital bed so they can nap. Their wife who\u2019s just given birth. Baby daddies who are more concerned with their video game than their laboring partner.<\/p>\n

\u201cTravis greets you at the train station with breakfast and your favorite tea in hand every morning. And checks in with you from halfway around the world to make sure you\u2019ve eaten. That\u2019s more than him just caring about the baby.\u201d I swallow the lump forming in my throat and try to stifle the butterflies in my belly. Her words feel too good to be true, although I\u2019ve told myself not to bother wanting something more with Travis.<\/p>\n

A piece of me wants to tell my best friend that this is nothing more than Travis stepping up and being a good guy, who\u2019s going to be a father. But then I remember that day at the hospital when he looked me in my eyes and told me he hadn\u2019t gotten everything he wanted yet. And I know I want to be a part of what he wants. \u201cCan I say how crazy it is that you have a man that flies all around the world to race?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have a man.\u201d My voice comes out weaker than I intended. Kandace sucks her teeth. \u201cYou\u2019re carrying that man\u2019s baby.\u201d \u201cThat doesn\u2019t make him my man.\u201d \u201cTell me, what does it mean then?\u201d \u201cIt means we had sex and the condom broke.\u201d I rise from my seat on the balcony when my kettle in the kitchen starts whistling. \u201cHmm, and have you slept with anyone since being with him?\u201d I pause while pouring my water into teacup.<\/p>\n

The two teenage boys the Palazzo security caught trying to get up to my hotel suite stare at me bewildered. They never made it up to the correct floor. \u201cWe\u2019re having some issues with the elevators, and when they couldn\u2019t give us a proper room number, we brought them down here,\u201d one of the security guards explains.<\/p>\n

I nod. \u201cThat\u2019s when they confessed why they\u2019re really here.\u201d I stare at the two teens. At first, I chalked up their attempt as two overly enthusiastic racing fans who\u2019d heard I arrived in Vegas early and wanted to sneak an autograph or something. Yet as I pendulum my gaze between them, the quick glimpses at one another, the lowered heads and what security discovered, hidden in their bags suggests something entirely different. \u201cHow old are you?\u201d I ask the lanky one with black hair. \u201cS-Sixteen,\u201d he answers, shifting from one foot to the other.<\/p>\n

His blond-haired friend nudges him with his elbow. \u201cLiar,\u201d he whispers loud enough for me and the three other men in this private room to hear. \u201cSunday\u2019s my birthday,\u201d the dark-haired one confesses a beat before his eyes drop back to the linoleum. \u201cThis weekend\u2019s Grand Prix is your birthday trip?\u201d I guess. \u201cHis dad brought us,\u201d the blond one answers. \u201cAnd you thought it\u2019d be a good idea to break in and vandalize my room?\u201d I scowl.<\/p>\n

They were found with spray paint, eggs, and rolls of toilet paper.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
