In 1956, Goldmann met with Ben-Gurion to discuss whether he should accept the presidency of the World Zionist Organization.

His hesitation was based in part on recognition that the office would prevent his being able “to talk frankly publicly about foreign political matters of Israel and eventually also to criticize Israel’s foreign policy.” The memo of the meeting, which summarizes their discussion and frank acknowledgment of significant differences with regard to Israel’s policy, also states that Ben-Gurion had assured Goldmann that if he took the position, which would lead to his being based in Jerusalem, he would be kept closely informed by the prime minister and by his foreign minister, Moshe Sharett.

It was evident that central to Ben-Gurion’s concerns was the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict and disagreement with both Goldmann and Sharett on that subject. Goldmann did accept the position, but the relationship remained conflicted.10 In 1960 the conflict surfaced with regard to the capture of Adolf Eichmann. Goldmann’s critique of Israeli plans for the trial generated an angry response from Ben-Gurion.

Printed in the United States of America No part of this book may be used or reproduced in any manner whatsoever without written permission.
