Hunter needs water to clear his throat and sees a bottle near the woman. Slowly, he leans closer, showing her his bound hands all the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was going to kill you.\u201d She makes no attempt to shift away. Has she even realized I\u2019m moving? He picks the bottle up, twists the cap, and drains it. \u201cI know.\u201d She looks up at him, her brow pinching with bewilderment. She offers an unwrapped trail bar.<\/p>\n<p>He doesn\u2019t move to take it. His attention is fixed on the scars that crisscross her face, mirroring those etched into his own. Broken lines skip from her chin, slashing both cheeks, the bridge of her nose, and one eyebrow. The ugliness doesn\u2019t dim her beauty in the slightest; if anything, it accentuates it. \u201cYou should have left me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not that kind of girl.\u201d She doesn\u2019t shy away from his scrutiny. Her injuries are recent, then. She doesn\u2019t remember she has them. He can\u2019t help but smile. It feels unfamiliar to him. Smiling is for cheerful people. She offers the food again but, this time, doesn\u2019t let him decline. He stretches out his arms, accepts the trail bar with both hands, and takes a bite. The taste of nuts and fruit colors his palette, getting his juices flowing. He is hungrier than he thought. \u201cWho\u2019s Wendall?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunter gazes up at her in surprise. \u201cMy brother.\u201d He attempts to rise, sucks in a painful breath, and rotates his shoulder. Damn it. \u201cBullet grazed your arm. I dressed it.\u201d She says this calmly. With a wince, he rotates his arms until he can see the blood-encrusted sleeve that has been rolled back. Underneath, he sees a gauze patch.
