It’s a pretty little place.’ They talked a little longer, then left to go back to work. As they were driving back, a thought occurred to Leigh and she asked, ‘By the way, why did the pilot I’m replacing walk out?’

Don was silent for a moment, then said in a tone of some embarrassment, ‘There was some trouble with his wife. The usual thing, an extra-marital affair. She came down to the airport a couple of times and there was an almighty row between the three of them.’ ‘The three of them?’ ‘The pilot and his wife and Bryce Allerton. And it ended with the pilot leaving there and then.

Though whether he left or Bryce sacked him, I don’t know. They’ve moved away now, I hear— gone up north somewhere. Good thing, if they manage to patch things up, but I doubt it; it had gone too far.’ ‘Yes, I see,’ Leigh said hollowly. She would have liked to ask Don more, but they were turning into the airport and the opportunity was lost.

So Bryce had been having an affair with the wife of one of his own pilots, had he? The information should hardly have surprised her, not after Sunday night, but somehow it did. She knew he was a skunk from the way he’d tried to blackmail her into giving herself to him in exchange for keeping her job, and yet he had had such a devastating effect on her sexually that she wanted to believe better of him. Naturally she had thought about that parting taunt he had made, thought about it more than once, but she had put it down to bravado on his part, a determination to have the last word.

But it didn’t do to think about Sunday night, not now that she had had confirmation of the type of man he was.

She wasn’t going to give up easily To compete in a man’s world, Leigh knew she’d have to be twice as good at her job. For even though she was a qualified, experienced pilot, her new boss made it clear he’d get rid of her as soon as possible. Bryce Allerton, head of his own air-charter company, was prejudiced against women on his staff, and there were many rumors to explain why! Leigh was prepared to fight him—but she hadn’t counted on having to fight her own feelings!

CHAPTER ONE The building that housed Allerton Air Charters was more imposing than Leigh had expected it to be. It was situated on the western side of the air- port, with its back to the runway, and stood out from the conglomeration of other buildings around it because of its smart, modern appearance; all large windows and pre-fabricated concrete. It was L-shaped and two-storeyed, with a neatly laid out car park within the area formed by the two wings.Leigh drove on past some warehouses, the local flying club and a repair shop, and parked in front of the Allerton building in a space marked ‘Visitors’.

A brief glance at her watch confirmed that she still had over twenty minutes before her appointment, as she’d planned. Unhurriedly, she got out of the Mini and took a good look around the airport. It wasn’t very large as airports go, had only really started to be used commercially in the last ten years, since the large new town of Shepton Ferrers had been built in the vicinity.

Now its main runway had been lengthened to take commercial aircraft, and there was a whole row of hangars together with the smaller offices and repair shops that went with them. Leigh locked the Mini and strolled round to the back of the Allerton building. Here double doors opened directly on to the tarmac so that passengers only had a short walk to the aircraft.

There were only two planes painted in the distinctive Allerton turquoise and white colours standing on the tarmac at the moment, a twin-engined Piper Aztec which was obviously used for air-taxi work, and a smaller Arrow. Over on the left there were two large hangars with the Allerton name high up over the doors, one of which was open to show another aircraft in the process of being serviced, but Leigh walked over to the two parked planes, looking them over closely.

They were both well maintained, the paintwork unchipped and sparkling, the windscreens clean, and the tyres looked good.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
