The spaces all have hidden triggers.\u201d Sabine pointed out a few secret doors and passageways, and even an entire hidden room that had once been a huge walk-in closet between bedrooms. Now it could only be accessed from a hallway through a false wall. She explained what items covered the hidden doors\u2014a bookshelf, a wardrobe, a display cabinet, an enormous wooden family crest\u2014and how to trigger the doors to open.<\/p>\n

Cabot focused on the hidden room, which was central to some of the areas where they\u2019d be fighting if things didn\u2019t go their way in the initial attack. \u201cThis room could come in handy if anyone gets into trouble or needs a rest,\u201d Cabot said. Based on past experiences, they all expected things to go wrong.<\/p>\n

A lot of things. With Sabine looking on, Cabot began writing up an information sheet with a makeshift drawing of what her teammates should look for if they were in a bind. But before she got too far, she turned abruptly to Sabine. \u201cDo you know where she is?\u201d \u201cWho?\u201d \u201cYour mother.\u201d \u201cOh!\u201d Sabine seemed taken aback. \u201cNo. Not really.\u201d \u201cDo you miss her?\u201d Sabine nodded slowly. \u201cYou miss her, but she left you, and that stinks.\u201d Sabine gave a small, tight-lipped smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would certainly know how that feels.\u201d \u201cMm,\u201d Cabot said, then shrugged. \u201cNot quite. At least mine didn\u2019t leave me with a monster.\u201d \u201cSo much to be thankful for,\u201d Sabine said sarcastically. Cabot laughed. \u201cMaybe when this is all over, you\u2019ll go find her.\u201d \u201cDo you recommend it after all you\u2019ve been through?\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s been a lot of work to reconcile with my parents, and it\u2019s not very fun because there are all those bad feelings to deal with.<\/p>\n

But yeah\u2026I guess I do recommend it.\u201d Sabine\u2019s smirk faded. \u201cI doubt I\u2019ll go that route. But maybe.\u201d \u201cWhy did she leave? I mean, because of your dad?\u201d Fuerte was awful. Who would want to stay? \u201cYeah, he wasn\u2019t secretly a good guy in private, that\u2019s for sure.\u201d \u201cWhy didn\u2019t she take you with her?\u201d \u201cShe never told me why. But from sneaking around and listening to the staff gossip, I think it was because my dad wouldn\u2019t let her take me. He got praised by the press for raising me, and my mom got pounded by them for \u2018abandoning\u2019 me.<\/p>\n

It was a whole big thing. I hated it.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s rough stuff.\u201d Cabot peered at her, concerned. \u201cAre you okay?\u201d \u201cEverybody has rough stuff.\u201d Sabine shifted in her chair. \u201cIt was a long time ago. You and I\u2014we\u2019re going to be all right. And now we have stuff to do.\u201d \u201cSo true.\u201d Cabot turned back to the hidden room location and wrote precise directions on how to find it so she could send it out to the team. In the front room, Troy, Lada, Seven, Cami, and Viviana were surrounded by enormous open boxes.<\/p>\n
