At others, she spoke of Longbourn and her sisters, of conversations that had not occurred in this place, of anxieties that belonged to the world above rather than to their current circumstances. He remained in constant attendance, moving about the cavern only when necessity demanded it. He explored the passages again, looking for anything that might help, cool water deeper in the cavern that he could apply to her forehead, any medicinal plants that might have somehow survived in this lightless place.

There was nothing. The cavern offered no cure, no relief except the cool water itself and the careful ministration of care. When her fever spiked in the early afternoon, rendering her unconscious with the intensity of it, Darcy found himself confronted with a choice that violated every precept of propriety that had guided his life. He could leave her covered in layers, allow her to suffer the fever in the hopes of maintaining the letter of respectability. Or he could do what his medical knowledge, limited though it was, suggested: cool her body, reduce the fever through whatever means available.

The choice was no choice at all. He removed his neckcloth and ventured back to the pool, soaking the fine linen in the cold water. When he returned to her, she was moving restlessly, her fevered mind trapped in some private nightmare. Darcy carefully arranged the wet cloth upon her forehead, noting the way her body seemed to respond almost immediately to the cool contact, though she remained unconscious. This was profoundly improper. If anyone, if the world above, discovered that he had touched her in such a manner, her reputation would be utterly destroyed.

And yet he found that he could not bring himself to regret it. Her life was of infinitely greater value than the preservation of social convention. As the hours wore on and the fever continued its inexorable intensification, Darcy was forced to abandon any pretence of maintaining the boundaries that had governed his behaviour toward her.

The characters and events portrayed in this book are fictitious. The journey, though not arduous, had been long enough to afford Elizabeth ample time for reflection. Her friend, Charlotte Lucas, a woman of sense and intelligence, was now the wife of Elizabeth’s cousin Mr. Collins, a man whose character was a curious mixture of clerical pomposity and servile humility.

That Charlotte could have accepted such a man, a man whom Elizabeth herself had unequivocally refused a few months past, was a source of constant wonder. Yet, her affection for her friend was undiminished, and it was with a heart full of genuine warmth that she alighted from the carriage before the Hunsford Parsonage. It was a small house, but one that possessed the unquestionable air of being both convenient and newly fitted-up; an impression instantly betrayed by the uniform neatness of the gravel walk, which, though short, was not suffered to hold a single weed.

The house itself, while of a respectable plainness that promised warmth and durability, was set out with a punctilious arrangement in all its parts.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
