I couldn\u2019t see much outside those windows, but I\u2019d bet in the daytime it was breathtaking, considering where this house sat. \u201cDo you have a view?\u201d I asked, looking over at him. He approached the couch with a bowl in each hand. I could see a spoon sticking out of the top of each one. He handed me one of the bowls and sat at the other end of the couch. Immediately, I was aware of the distance between us. He was too far away.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I guess you can\u2019t see it right now,\u201d he said. \u201cHold on.\u201d He leaned forward and grabbed a large, square device with a screen on it from his coffee table. He tapped around on the screen, and suddenly the outside lights flipped on. \u201cShut the front door,\u201d I said as I stared at the scene in front of me. It was a giant window, similar to the one at the bar and grill. But instead of overlooking ski slopes as the lodge did, this cabin overlooked some sort of waterway\u2014maybe a pond, maybe a lake.<\/p>\n

On the other side of it was what looked like a snow-covered forest with trees as far as the eye could see. \u201cThat\u2019s why I picked this lot,\u201d Lucas said, scooping a big spoonful of sundae into his mouth. When he swallowed, he looked toward the window and said, \u201cIt\u2019s also why I\u2019m careful about how we source our lumber for our projects. When people pick lots, I want to leave as many trees up as possible, and that\u2019s not easy when you\u2019re trying to get wood to build the cabins.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you thought about taking some of the trees from the ski runs?\u201d I asked. \u201cI feel like they\u2019re a safety hazard. It just takes one skier losing control and veering over toward the woods and\u2026disaster.\u201d I was putting together the perfect bite of a blend of ice cream, chocolate, and caramel when I realized he\u2019d stopped eating to stare at me. I backtracked, trying to figure out what I might have said that had him gaping.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour boss would never let that happen,\u201d Lucas said. With a chuckle, he shook his head. \u201cNo way, no how. If he did, though, it would be for his own project.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeah, it was beautiful and peaceful and blah, blah, blah. But the biggest benefit to living in the mountains when it snowed was that everyone stayed off the damn roads. I took a sip from my coffee cup and settled it back into my cupholder as I braced for the most treacherous part of this drive.<\/p>\n

It was all downhill from my cabin, but my trusty old four-wheel-drive truck handled that just fine. It was the big curve just past the lodge that put me on edge, especially since this road was only two lanes. I put both hands on the wheel, pulled my foot off the gas, and lightly tapped the brakes to make up for the natural acceleration that happened as I traveled this steep mountain road.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d just started to get comfortable when I saw movement through the trees up ahead. On the other side of that curve was a vehicle. It was white, so it would have blended with the snow if I hadn\u2019t looked carefully. I assessed my options just in case the car drifted over the line. Those options were limited. There was a guardrail on either side, so at least I didn\u2019t have to worry about driving off the side of the mountain.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
